Anna M. Stranc, 100, of Holmen, passed peacefully February 7, 2017 at the Mayo Clinic Health System – Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse, WI.

Ann was born August 22, 1916 to Joseph and Nettie [Wisher] Groth in Oelwein IA. Ann graduated from Aquinas High School in 1934. She later attended nurses training at the St. Vincent’ Hospital and Infants Asylum in Chicago, IL. In 1935 she met Arthur Stranc while he was at the CCC camp at Ft. McCoy. They were married October 16, 1937 at St. John’s Catholic Church in La Crosse, WI and moved to Chicago. The family moved back to La Crosse in 1946. Over the years Ann worked many jobs while raising her family. She was proudest of her time employed as a nurse’s aide at the St. Francis Hospital and later for 13 years at the Lakeview Health Center from which she retired in 1978. She was a devout Catholic and a charter member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Holmen. Ann enjoyed taking care of others, especially infants and her family. She always had the coffee pot on and the refrigerator open. Ann and Art loved to travel and go camping. In 2003 her and Art moved to Phoenix, AZ to be closer to the youngest grandchildren. After Art’s death in 2009 she returned to Wisconsin.

She is survived by a son James [Gailyne] Stranc of Trempealeau, WI, daughters Kathryn [Glenn] Carson of Phoenix, AZ, Patricia Matthies of West Bend, WI and Susanne Stranc [special friend, Frank Smaby] of Holmen, WI and son-in-law Harold Lynch of French Island. Also by 7 grandchildren [Michael [Jane] and Mark Lynch, Peter Stranc, Andrea Chick, Nicholas [Stacy] Thompson, Robert and Billy Carson] and 4 great-grandsons [Ethan, Aidan, Ian Thompson, Mark Lynch, Jr.] and a great-granddaughter [Raelynn Carson]. Also many nephews and nieces who last summer came to celebrate her 100th birthday. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Art, brothers John and Lawrence Groth, sister Marian Gulden, daughter Georgine Lynch and grandson Paul Stranc.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday February 20, 2017 at the Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Holmen. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of the service. Burial will be at a later date.

My deepest sympathies on the loss of your Mom. We worked together at Lakeview beginning in the “old” old building. She was a hard, efficient worker. At one time, one of the farm cats would ride home with her somewhere under her car, hang out in Holmen for a couple of days and return to Lakeview the same way.
