Roger D. Gilberg

Roger D. Gilberg of Holmen passed away at Gundersen Health System, La Crosse on January 23, 2015.  He was born in La Crosse on August 27, 1929 to Arthur and Mabel (Hough) Gilberg.

He worked for the CNW Railroad for 10 years.  During that time, he served in the United States Army from 1951-1953 in the 45th Chemical Company stationed in the US and England.  In the early 1960’s, He and his wife purchased the Pure Oil Service Station and later built the Union 76 Station in Holmen and operated it until 1977.  After that, he worked for United Auto until his retirement.

He married Berna Lerew in 1954.  She passed away in 1984.  He later married Jo Ann Anderson in 1986.  He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church, La Crosse and a member of Holmen Lutheran Church.  Roger was a life-long member of the American Legion Post 284.  He loved to go up north fishing, traveling and boating with family and friends.  He also enjoyed many good times with his Legion buddies.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Berna, his parents, his brother, Richard, and nephew, Rick Gilberg.  He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann, three daughters, Evelyn ‘Evie’ (Al) Slaathaug, Rock Rapids, IA, Joan (Paul) Hauser, Holmen, Lisa Gilberg, Eagan, MN, step-children Ted (Kimberley) Lisota, Jr, North Bend, and Sherri Lisota, Holmen, grandchildren, Zachary (Samantha Potter) Stuhr, Casey (Megan) Stuhr, Alexis (Dan Hesselberg) and Kayla Hauser, step-grandchildren Tim (Erin) Lisota, Patricia Lisota, Adriana Christians, J. Olivia (Brayden) Liebenberg, Shannon Kolen, Ashley (James) Jessen and Allie (Sam) Gronning, great grandchildren, Hunter, Abigail, and Nicholas Stuhr, Brayden and Teagen Lisota, Mason and Maddison Jessen, Ava and Grace Gronning, sister-in-laws, Patricia Gilberg, Spooner, Dolores Johnson, La Crosse, brother-in-laws, Myron (Emily) Anderson, Ettrick, and Andy Anderson (North Bend) and also many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holmen Lutheran Church, Long Coulee Cemetery, or to the charity of your choice.  The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the staff of Gundersen for their wonderful care during Roger’s many stays.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am at Holmen Lutheran Church on Saturday January 31, 2015 followed by burial at Long Coulee Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the time of the service also at the church.  Pastor Matt Toso will officiate.

Coulee Region Cremation Group and Funeral Home is assisting the family.
