Russell “Russ” Hellwig

Russell “Russ” Dean Hellwig, 69, of Newburg Corners, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2015, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. He was born on December 13, 1945 to Herman and Ellen (Morrison) Hellwig. He married Sandy Greeno on August 15, 1970 in Tomah, Wisconsin.

Russ was a great friend and neighbor, who was always willing to help out those in need. He enjoyed hunting, playing cards, and playing Rummikub with his special friend, Pat Lee. Russ also loved to whale watch in Maui. He had a vast collection of cookbooks and had a style of cooking that was unique to him. Most of all Russ enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy; son, Dean (Kathy) Hellwig; daughter, Kathy Hellwig; grandchildren, Carter, Olivia, Sophia Hellwig; mother in law, Alverna Greeno; brother, Glen (Wendy) Hellwig; sisters, Ruth (Aaron) Pientok, Shirley Fedie; brothers in law, Lewis Greeno, Kevin (Debbie) Greeno, Kerwin (Kim) Greeno; sisters in law, Ellen (Norm) Rood, Karen (Jeff) Cronick, Sheila (John) Barrett; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father in law, Lewis Greeno; brother in law, Larry Greeno; nephew, Paul Fedie; and special friend, Ralph Mishowsky.

The family would like to thank all of Sandy’s coworkers who cared for Russ on the 6 West Cardiopulmonary Unit and the staff on the Critical Care Unit at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm at Wesley United Methodist Church, 721 King Street La Crosse, on Saturday, September 19, 2015. Visitations will be held on Friday, September 18 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Coulee Region Cremation Group, 133 Mason Street, Onalaska, and from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm on Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Pacific Whale Foundation.

Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family.
