Clinton Russell Armstrong

Clinton Russell Armstrong, 74, died peacefully October 10th , 2011in the presence of his family and pets.

 

He was born April 21, 1937 in Philadelphia, PA, the second of five children born to Dorothy L. and Russell D. Armstrong. His early years were spent in Lawnside, NJ, after which he attended the University of Illinois, earning degrees in both botany and biology.

 

After graduation, he joined the Army and served in various locations in the U.S., the last of which was Fairbanks, AK, where he worked as a lab technician.

 

While in Alaska he met and married Arlene Hicks, (deceased). Together they had a son, Clinton R. Armstrong II, and he became a father to step-son Tyrece (deceased). He later worked for Stauffer Chemical in Richmond, CA, Southern Oregon University in Ashland, OR, and the Forest Service Nursery in Dorena, OR, during which time he was nationally recognized for his contributions to reforestation research, and from which he retired.

 

Clinton enjoyed fishing, organic farming, animal husbandry, painting, dancing, barbecuing, reading, coaching his son in track and field, and sharing both his insights and his sense of humor with others. He was an early advocate for civil rights, and remained dedicated to social justice, political activism and peace.

 

He was preceded in death by both parents and his eldest sister, Shirley Brooks. He is survived by his son, Clinton R. Armstrong II, his daughter-in-law Lisa, his grandson Mitchell Armstrong of Onalaska, WI; his sisters Carol Scott of Philadelphia, PA and Gail Armstrong of Portland, OR; his brother, Orson Armstrong of Middleton, CA; and ex-wife Candyce Armstrong of Grants Pass, OR.
