John Max Scheel

John Max Scheel, 87, of La Crosse, Wisconsin died Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Riverside where he had resided for the past four years, two of those years with his wife Mary, who proceeded him in death on January 17, 2016. John was born January 26, 1931 to Carl Sr. and Evelyn Scheel in La Crosse Wisconsin.

John is survived by his son, Michael Scheel and grandson, David Scheel of Onalaska; step-grandson, Derek (Arley) Armstrong and their children, Maya and Ryan of Holmen; daughter, Jane (Mike) Thorne and granddaughter, Rachel Thorne and step-grandsons, Donovan Sisler and Dustin Sisler of Pekin IL; two sister-in-law’s, Billie Scheel of Sun Prairie, WI and Pat (Clyde) Hall of Bonney Lake, WA; and several nieces and nephews.

John was proceeded in death by his wife of 61 years, Mary, his parents and two brothers, Carl Jr (Catherine) Scheel and James Scheel.

John was a life long resident of La Crosse. John served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Okinawa. Upon returning to the US, he finished out his enlistment in Kansas, where he met his wife Mary.  They returned to La Crosse where John worked for his Father in the Painting and Wallpaper business and took over the business when his father retired in 1965.

In their later years, John and Mary enjoyed trips to the many area casinos and their fishing trips to Lake Holcombe in northern Wisconsin.

To follow his wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service.

The family is most grateful for the caring and professional staff at Bethany Lutheran Riverside, who went above and beyond for John.

    I always visited with John when I visited my sister Jeanette Manske who pasted away at Riverside in Feb. He was such a good friend to her, checking in on her often, and talking BREWERS, He was such a kind and gentle man. Blessed be his memory.
