Obituary

Donald George Gehrig

January 26, 2015

Donald George Gehrig, 82, of La Crosse, passed away at home on January 14, 2015. He was born in La Crosse on September 13, 1932 to George and Hattie (Biskup) Gehrig.

After graduating from Aquinas High School, Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged for a medical condition, but supported his fellow veterans through his service to the American Legion. Don was a founding member of the American Legion Post 52 and proudly belonged to the organization for 63 years.

Don was employed by the City of La Crosse for over 39 years, retiring in 1990 as the Superintendent of Streets. He greatly valued his working relationship with Mathy Construction, often commenting on it. Later, he befriended many while working at the Town of Shelby and volunteering at Mayo Clinic Health System.

Don enjoyed walking his dog, tending his garden, fishing, vacationing up north, and several trips to our national parks and Alaska. In his earlier years, he liked to hunt out west and attend Packer and Viking games with friends. His political opinions and morning coffee will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Pam Gehrig; daughter, Sarah Gehrig; mother-in-law, Marion Fuchs; and his nephew, George Gehrig.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lugardia (Howard) Colvin and Faustine “Boots” (Bernard) Daines; his brother, John “Jack” (Mildred) Gehrig; his parents, George and Hattie Gehrig; and his former wife, Patricia Gehrig.

The family would like to thank all those who assisted Don during his cancer treatment, including the nurses, front desk staff, and Dr. Ticku from the Mayo Clinic Oncology department, as well as Mayo Clinic Hospice. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Condolences
