Sister Mary Stadelman

Sister Mary Stadelman, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, 88, died Nov. 23, 2015, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse, Wis. She was in the sixty-eighth year of her religious profession.

Born March 28, 1927, in Blanchardville, Wis., Sister Mary was the daughter of John and Nina (Bussman) Stadelman. She entered St. Rose Convent in 1943.

Sister Mary entered the field of education after receiving her education degree from Viterbo College (University). She taught middle and upper grade students in elementary schools in Iowa, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin for 33 years, including 17 years in Spokane, Wash. After completing the requirements for a Nationally Certified Chaplain, Sister Mary ministered at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane, from 1981 to 1999. She retired in Spokane, and then moved in 2001 to St. Rose Convent, where she served as sacristan for three years. In 2012, she moved to Villa St. Joseph.

Sister Mary is survived by her Franciscan community; her brother, Leo, from Freeport, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, John and Werner; and her sisters, Sophie and Edith.

Since Sister Mary requested a natural burial, her wake was held at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at Villa St. Joseph. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, in the Villa chapel. Burial will follow immediately in Villa St. Joseph. There will be a memorial service for Sister Mary at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at St. Rose Convent, with sharing following. Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting with the arrangements.
