Obituary
Harlan David McLain
Harlan David McLain, 57, of La Crosse passed away peacefully June 7, 2023, at home
surrounded by his loving family after a 14-month battle with glioblastoma.
Harlan was born June 28, 1965, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Sparta to Diana and Harlan McLain.
He graduated from Cashton High School in 1983 and the University of Wisconsin—Eau Claire
in 1988.
Harlan married the love of his life, Katherine (Hegg) Carmichael, Sept. 7, 1997, in La Crosse.
The couple raised three beautiful girls together while living on La Crosse’s South Side. Harlan
enjoyed playing board games with his family members, particularly Stratomatic football,
basketball and baseball. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, who were equally
thrilled to spend time with their grandpa.
When not spending time with his family, Harlan enjoyed golfing, biking and running. He had a
love of all sports, cheering on the Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee
Bucks. Growing up, Harlan played football, baseball, and basketball for Cashton High School.
He especially loved basketball, playing it most of his life and rooting for the Wisconsin
Badgers and La Crosse Central High School Riverhawks, formerly known as the Raiders. He
enjoyed having a cold beer with his many friends in the La Crosse area. He worked at State Bank Financial in La Crosse for many years.
Harlan is survived by his wife Kathy; daughters, Alissa (Skeeter) Henderson, Emily McLain,
Megan (David) Serleth; grandchildren, Anthony Henderson, and Adelaide and Maeve Serleth;
mother Diana Jackson; stepmother Mary McLain; siblings, Kevin (Cindy) McLain, Lisa (Paul)

Harlan, sure going to miss you. RIP
Harlan was my neighbor growing up in rural Cashton. We rode the bus together, Sharee many classes together and I cheered him on in football and basketball in high school. His knowledge of sports at all levels was impressive and he was my source for all my WI sports questions! I will treasure our last visit together last fall when I was in town for Oktoberfest. I’m so glad it all worked out. We met his granddaughter Maeve and could tell how much love was permeating throughout their home. Harlan was always up for a good time and valued his friendships. I’m sorry he suffered even a little bit during his illness and I am certain he’s in heaven playing a round of perfect golf with that big, crooked grin on his face! May God bless you always, old friend!
Thank you for your kind words Julie. I am so thankful that you were able to visit with us last fall, it meant so much to Harlan. ❤️
