Obituary

Daniel Christopher Skemp

Daniel Christopher Skemp died peacefully on January 8, 2014, at his home in La Crosse. The fourth of seven children, Dan was born on June 14, 1934, to Dr. George and Mrs. Mary Skemp. He attended Blessed Sacrament and Aquinas High Schools and served his country in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956.

Following his military service Dan returned to La Crosse. He attended St. Mary’s College in Winona, MN, as well as UW-La Crosse. In 1959 he embarked upon a one-year study-abroad program in Vienna, Austria. It was this during this period that he met the woman who would become his wife of 47 years, Eliza “Tucky” Skemp. They were married in Munich, Germany,

in August, 1960, and returned to the U.S. in the summer of 1961, with their infant daughter Elizabeth. They lived in La Crosse until June of 1962, while Dan completed his undergraduate education at UW-L. They then moved to Palo Alto, California, where Tucky finished her education at Stanford.

In 1966, Dan graduated from the University of Santa Clara School of Law in Santa Clara, CA. He practiced law in San Jose, CA, where he and Tucky raised their four children. In 1980 they moved back to La Crosse with their three younger children. Dan continued to practice law in La Crosse until his retirement.

Dan was predeceased by his beloved wife Tucky in 2007. He is survived by his daughter and loving caregiver for the last three years, Elizabeth, his son George (Kim) of Fountain Hills, AZ, his son Dan Jr., (Dana) of La Crosse, and his daughter Marty (Geof) of Madison. He will be dearly missed by his six grandchildren, Andrew, Will, Jonathan, Jessica, Lauren and Ethan.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2014, at Blessed Sacrament Church in La Crosse. There will also be a visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, January 18, followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament, officiated by the Rev. Robert Cook.  Interment will be held at the Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors.  The Skemp family is deeply grateful to the Coulee Region Cremation Group for all arrangements.

The family also extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Paula Gill and her staff at the Mayo-Franciscan Cancer Center, as well as to the Hospice staff, and to the dedicated individuals who helped take such good care of our Dad in the last months of his illness.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Salvation Army, the Mayo-Franciscan Cancer Center, or the Mayo-Franciscan Hospice.
