Harland “RED” Edmunds

Harland “RED” Edmunds 90, passed away on Friday October 7th, 2022 at Mayo Hospital in LaCrosse. He was born on February 10, 1932 in Glendive, Montana. His Mother passed away when he was 5 years old, his Father moved him to the Holmen area to be raised by Cousins and other relatives where he would help with chores on farms to earn his keep before and after school.

A 1950 Graduate of Holmen High School. He married Edna Mae Schafer on January 26, 1951.  He was a Veteran Of the U.S. Navy and trained as a Hospital Corpsman. Lists of employment included Bordens pasteurizing Plant in LaCrosse, Truck driver for Gamble Robinson delivering fresh produce to area grocery stores and Restaurants, Elvord Trucking hauling hot asphalt for road construction, and for 43 years he and his Wife were Proprietors of Schafers Boat Livery on beautiful Lake Onalaska, Brice Prairie. The Family lived above the Bait shop. After they sold the Baitshop in 2005, he continued living there until his passing.

Anyone that grew up on Brice Prairie most likely bought some bait and fishing tackle or rented a boat from them at one time or another. There were lifelong friendships made with the Customers that came from all over.

He enjoyed many hours of Volunteering over the years, From taking disabled Veterans from the Tomah VA out fishing and then having a big fish fry in the parking lot, to his many hours of Volunteering with NASA (north american squirrel association) when they took disabled persons and seniors out fishing and hunting and for boat rides on the NASA pontoon where he was a Captain for many years. He received awards for his Extraordinary Volunteerism in 2006 and 2009.

He was often featured in the LaCrosse Tribune with articles written by Bob Lamb Tribunes Outdoor Editor

He was a member of the Brice Prairie Conservation Club and received the Conservation Alliance Award in 2005.

He received the American Legion Life membership card in 1995. He spent many volunteer hours Charcoal grilling the best chicken ever at the Holmen Kornfest back when volunteers did all the work. He was a proud member of the Morris Snuggerud Post 284 American Legion in Holmen.  Every morning he saluted the flag outside his living room window and recited the Pledge Of Allegiance.

Red is survived by his Daughters Vickie(Ron) Wing, Holmen, WI, Cindy(Garry) Sacia, Trempealeau, WI, Son in Law Bill LaFleur, Holmen, WI.; Grandchildren, Troy Wing, Donald (Nickolene) LaFleur, Susan Montgomery, Jason (Tammy) Montgomery, Jennifer (Tony) Pauley, Timothy (Augusta Favre) Wing, Amanda (George) Baldwin, Ashley (Louie Valencia) Sacia, Scott Sacia; 19 Great Grandchildren, Chris Wing, Alex Wing, Kasey Wing, Conlin Wing, Aryiah Wing, Arynn Wing. Dawson LaFleur, Daya LaFleur, Jozy LaFleur, Jorn LaFleur. Jasmyne Jefferson, Dyvonte Clinton. Kylie (Allison) Montgomery, Jadyn Montgomery. Baylie (Cam) Grubic, Kolton Pauley, Emily Pauley. Calvin Welsh, Rhys Welsh; 2 Great-great Grandchildren, Mason and Kai and 1 on the way due in December; Sister in Law, Lois (Lloyd) Oelke, Tavares, FL,

He was preceded in death by His Wife of 55 years Edna Mae (Schafer) Edmunds His Daughter, Lindy (Edmunds) LaFleur, His Parents, Antone Edmunds and Anna (Schneider) Edmunds, Mother and Father in Law, Harry and Edna (Riley) Schafer, Sister in Law, Yvonne (Schafer)  Weber, Granddaughter Michelle Wing

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday November 4, 2022 at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason Street, Onalaska, WI. with visitation from 10:00 am until the time of the service.  A lunch will be provided following the service.  Military Honors will take place at the Onalaska City Cemetery, 1200 Main Street, Onalaska  following the lunch.
