Daniel Martin Wellendorf

Dan Wellendorf of La Crescent, Minnesota, passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2023. Dan and his sons formed Wellendorf Contractors 35 years ago. Dan was called Dude in his hometown of Lansing, Iowa, where he was their police chief. Dan was on the Lansing Fire Department for many years. He founded Lansing Little League Baseball and was the 6th grade baseball coach with 49 wins, 0 losses. He was on the baseball and basketball Lansing town teams where he was their coach and manager.

Dan worked at Norplex-Allied Signal as a supervisor for over 27 years in La Crosse. He played for Norplex Oak Softball and Basketball Team and was their coach and manager. He was the La Crosse Independent League Treasurer. Dan co-founded La Crescent Youth Baseball and was coaching up to six youth teams during the summers. He was on their board of directors.

Dan was a hands-on dad who attended all his son’s games in baseball, football, wrestling and soccer. He also coached them in school.

In 1994, Dan won the Friends of La Crescent Youth Baseball Award. He was the Lancer JV Baseball Coach and Baseball Booster Club VP. He was Lancer Matt Club VP and President.

Dan was in the La Crescent Fire Department for 19 years and was their president, relief association VP, training officer and first responder.

Dan pitched for Wellendorf Contractors making him the oldest softball player still playing and pitching. No one could stump him on baseball.

Dan was named the 1995 La Crescent Man of The Year, an honor given for all he did for the city of La Crescent and its youths. Dan was an avid baseball fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Dodgers.

Dan is survived by his ex-wife Grace, sons Brian Jay of La Crescent, Jeff Daniel (Bridgette) of the Woodlands, Texas, two grandchildren Braedan Michael and Kailee Marie, sister Janann (Jim) Anderson of Swisher, Iowa, sister-in-law Patty Wellendorf of Lansing, Iowa, special godchildren Jamie Wellendorf and Tommy Bauer, many nieces and nephews, special friends George Horihan and Ray Dickson. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents Sonny and Fran and two brothers James and Robert.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials be given to the La Crescent Youth Baseball and La Crescent Fire Department. 

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, September 3, 2023 from 2-5 at Swing Bridge, 595 Veterans Parkway in La Crescent, Minnesota.

    We just wanted to let you know that our thoughts are with you and your family. We had just been talking about Dan and wondering how he was doing. Hadn’t seen him for quite awhile. He will be missed by the La Crescent Community.
