David R. Smith

David R. Smith of Onalaska, passed away peacefully at Mulder Healthcare Facility on September 6th, 2023, at the age of 82, with his wife Mary by his side. He was born on September 16th, 1940 to Lester and Juanita Smith.

He grew up in La Crosse, WI with his six brothers and sisters. David enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served for numerous years. He then went on to work for La Crosse Cooler Company and Trane Company for 25 years, where he later retired.

He married his wife Mary (Hoscheit) on October 28th, 1967 in La Crosse, WI. Together they had three children and raised their family in Onalaska, WI. David enjoyed spending time outdoors, woodworking, taking care of his lawn, and most of all being with his family. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandpa, and great grandpa.

David is survived by his wife, Mary, daughter Lynn (Terry) Oynes, son Mike (Lauren) Smith; grandchildren Terra (Nick) Noe, Sarah (Josh) Cook, Allison (Nick) Bartz, Kade, Mason, and Hadley Smith; great-grandchildren Piper and Levi Cook; sister Anita Goldbeck, sister Gloria (Donnie) Kelly, brother Harold (Judy) Smith, brother-in-law Bill Faas, and sister-in-law Karen Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son David Jr. Smith, parents Lester and Juanita Smith, sister Lois Faas, brothers Stanley (Phyllis), Ernie, Melvin, Gilbert, Ronald, and Donald Smith.

The family would like to send a special thank you to Gundersen Hospice and Mulder Nursing Home for the care they provided. He will be greatly missed, and we will cherish the wonderful, kind, caring and family-loving man that he was.

A private burial will be held for the immediate family.  A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, October 7th, 2023 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Holmen Area Community Center – 600 N. Holmen Drive, Holmen, WI 54636.

    A great man I will sorely miss. Rest in peace Uncle Dave. I hope you have your comb cuz some day, I’ll see you again and mess up your perfect hair.

    So sorry to hear about Dave passing. Our condolences to the family. We grew up together and we worked together at Tranes.
