Donald “Don” E. Freagon, age 98, of La Crosse, WI, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.  Don was a devoted Team USA supporter who could always be seen sporting the Olympic rings, whether officially, or handcrafted. It’s no surprise he passed away during the games he loved so much.  Don lived a life full of compassion, laughter, and kindness, touching the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Born and raised in the small town of Cadott, WI, Don was immensely proud of his roots. He often shared stories of his hometown with anyone who would listen, embodying the warmth and friendliness of Cadott in everything he did. He was a devoted son, a loving brother and uncle, a doting father, an adoring grandfather, and a cherished great-grandfather. His nurturing spirit and caring nature were evident in every role he played, be it as a father, uncle, or mentor.

Don’s love story with his beloved wife, Marion, began on a train, a tale as romantic as it was timeless. Their journey together was filled with joy, adventures, and countless cherished moments. A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Don served his country with honor and pride during World War II in the South Pacific, embodying the values of bravery and dedication. One of his most cherished memories was attending the Freedom Honor Flight, a poignant reminder of his service and sacrifice.

As a product of the Great Depression, Don learned to waste nothing. His resourcefulness and frugality were hallmarks of his character, and he passed these values on to his family, who admired his ability to make the most of every situation.

An avid golf enthusiast, Don spent many sunny afternoons on the golf course, perfecting his game and enjoying the camaraderie of his fellow golfers. He often helped his grandkids and their friends improve their golf swings, giving tips and encouragement between baseball and softball practices. Don was also a talented baseball player, bringing the same enthusiasm and skill to the diamond as he did to every aspect of his life. His passion for sports extended to coaching, where he inspired and guided many young athletes.

Don’s professional life was just as remarkable.

His career as an English teacher allowed him to share his knowledge and passion with countless students. He had a keen eye for detail, and one of his favorite pastimes was proofreading the newspaper, delighting in catching every grammatical error and typo. His influence as a teacher and coach left an indelible mark on the lives of those he taught, fostering both their personal and academic growth.  As a salesman for Colgate-Palmolive, his charm and wit made him a natural. He often reminisced with a twinkle in his eye, saying, “When I was young and full of hope, I washed with Palmolive soap.”  He retired following a long and successful career in liquor sales.

Don’s sense of humor was legendary, always ready with a joke or a funny story to brighten someone’s day. His favorite Ole and Lena jokes were a staple at family gatherings, never failing to elicit laughter and groans in equal measure. His self-titled nickname, “Don Juan from Capistran,” reflected his playful and charismatic personality. Don had a notorious sweet tooth and loved cookies, candy, and anything sweet, often joking that dessert was the most important meal of the day. He believed that dessert should be enjoyed before dinner, without any guilt.

Don is preceded in death by his beloved wife Marion, parents Henrietta and Bernard, siblings Bernard Jr, Mildred (Mickey), Duane, Lyle and Bob.  He is survived by his brother Clarence (Bevo), sister in law Lois Locatelli, daughters Kim (Mike) Gram and Kalah (Joel) Haug, grandchildren, Lacy (Britton) Wolf, Corey (Kadie) Haug, Storm (Jordan) Gram and Ashley (Alex) Macak, and great grandchildren Maverick, Harper, Trygve, Eden, Ryder, Jaxson, Crew, Nash, Palmer and Knox, nieces and nephews, many friends and his fellow golf enthusiast and dear friend, Steve Olsen.

Though he has left this world, Don’s legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He leaves behind a family who adored him, a community who respected him, and a world made better by his presence. Rest in peace, dear Don.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the extremely competent, caring, and compassionate staff at Gundersen Health System Hospice, Marinuka Manor, and Bethany Heights. You truly allowed Don the space to fully enjoy his final years, days, and moments, and we will be forever grateful.

A private celebration with family will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Gundersen Medical Foundation in Don’s honor.

May Don’s memory be eternally blessed. I had to honor and privilege to know “Don Juan” from Bethany Heights where I would see him weekly during church. His humor, his stories, and his faith were a gift. Well done, good and faithful servant.
