Obituary
Carol Joanne (Espelien) Swedberg
Carol Joanne (Espelien) Swedberg passed away on November 4,2025 at Riverside Transitional Care, La Crosse, WI from dementia.
Carol was born on March 12,1942 at the old Spring Grove, MN hospital to Theodore and Emma (Johnson) Espelien. She grew up on the family farm just north of Spring Grove and graduated from Spring Grove High School. She attended a clerical school in Mankato, MN and then was employed for a short time at G. Heileman, La Crosse, WI.
Carol was the 1962 Spring Grove Dairy Princess. In June 1962, while riding on the Dairy Princess float at Dairy Days, she was noticed by a young man who was new to town. Later that week, she and the young man happened to be at a local restaurant at the same time and found each other. Dennis Swedberg was that young man. Carol and Dennis were married at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spring Grove, MN on February 10, 1963.
After marriage, they moved to a home in Dakota, MN and later bought a home in La Crescent, MN. They raised their family in La Crescent. Carol and Dennis had two children, Susan Marie in 1968 and Brian Lee in 1970. Carol was a very good homemaker and raised her children in a very loving way. She was always proud of her children.
Carol worked at Sears, first downtown and then at Valley View Mall, for twenty years part-time but most weeks turned out to be almost full- time. In mid 1990s Carol and Dennis retired from their jobs and devoted their time to running Swedberg Apartments. They spent a lot of time remodeling, repairing, and maintaining several apartment buildings. This kept them busy until they fully retired at the end of 2016.
Carol is survived by her husband, Dennis; daughter, Susan (Bill) Boisvert; son, Brian (Danielle) Swedberg; grandchildren Zachary (Rebecca), Brinli, Paytience, Lydia, and Theodore Swedberg; great grandchildren, Aria, Thea, and Micah Swedberg; brothers Truman (Carol) Espelien and Gordon Espelien; three nieces and a nephew.
According to Carol’s wishes, she will be cremated with no funeral service and a burial later at Trinity Cemetery, Spring Grove, MN.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Riverside Transitional Care for the kindness, compassion, and wonderful care they provided to Carol over the past four years. A special thank you to Vickie, Chandra, and Chelsea.

Deepest sympathy to all of Carol’s family. I was blessed to work with Carol at Sears and she was the dearest friend. I can still see her smile and hear her little laugh.
