Obituary

Ronald “Ron” Harper

January 3, 2026 | 5 comments

Ronald Harper, known affectionately as Ron to everyone who knew him, was born on February 25, 1946, to Viola and Marvin Harper in Clay Center, Kansas later moving to Nebraska. In 1964, Ron moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin, a place he embraced as home for the majority—and final—years of his life.
He passed away peacefully at his home on December 30, 2025.
Ron was a man of unwavering strong work ethic and dedication, qualities that defined his life as a hard worker often working two jobs. A self-taught musician with an extraordinary ear, he could play and sing beautifully despite never learning to read music. His passion for music led him to perform bass in numerous bands throughout the years, starting with his first group, Ronnie and the Starfires, to the Stingrays and many others. It was through his music that he formed a lifelong friendship with Scott Jungen.
A masterful storyteller, Ron was renowned for his ability to embellish tales with colorful details, captivating listeners with his charm and humor. He had a deep love for cars and projects. One memorable story to share was about his 1966 Chevelle, which he told his wife at the time he was trading in for a practical “family car”—only to return home with a hearse.
He was preceded in death by his parents Viola and Marvin Harper, siblings Gerald Harper and Wanda Kendhammer and grandson Brennan Harper.
Ron is survived by his former wife, Ardie; their four children and their significant others:  Son Shawn and Jennifer of Milwaukee Wisconsin , Daughter Nikki and Husband Steve of Tigard Oregon , Son Adam and Lyrica of Lacrosse Wisconsin , and Daughter Jenni and Travis of Onalaska Wisconsin; as well as his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his niece Debbie, and her daughters Brenda, and Paula, all of Arizona.
Per Ron’s request, there will be no services.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Ron’s name to the Coulee Region Humane Society, reflecting his profound love for animals.
Ron will be remembered for his music, his stories, his projects, and the warmth he brought to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, friendship, and kindness to all who knew him.

I am Rons former sister in law, Donna, all tho I had not kept up with Ron these last few years I will always remember his eagerness to help someone with car trouble or a loan of 10 bucks till my payday. How can I forget all those Friday nights anxious to get out of the house to go where Ron was playing that weekend, lots of dancing, lots of beer and lots of fun !! Thank you Ron for all the great memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to his kids. Time will heal this deep wound.
