Obituary
Wesley M. (Bill) Bailey
Wesley M. (Bill) Bailey passed away unexpectedly on October 16, 2026, at Gundersen Hospital (Emplify) in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Bill was born in La Crosse on January 2, 1945, to Wesley and BernaDean (Latimer) Bailey. He spent his early days observing the customers in his mother’s beauty shop and being teased by his three sisters.
Bill proudly served his country in the United States Navy, stationed in Hawaii. His family was proud of his military service, and he always wore baseball caps honoring the armed services. At a Central high school reunion, he met the love of his life, Sue Knutson, spending many happy years with her and gaining not just a wife but also children Christine and Kevin. He was especially close to his sister Pam and husband Don, with whom they shared many adventures.
Bill lived as a self-employed businessman in a variety of pursuits, primarily conducting energy audits. Upon retirement, he kept quite busy as a talented DIY person, refinishing and repairing furniture and fixing darn near everything for family and friends. He was a generous neighbor, always providing a helping hand and watchful eye. He would gladly share his tools and advice with all. He loved the many dogs in his life, including his current spoiled Yorkie Daisy, and was welcomed by all the dogs in the neighborhood since he always carried a pocketful of dog treats. He was kind and supportive of his kids and grandkids, including teaching them to drive, basic repair and carpentry skills, and even how to cook potatoes.
Bill was known for his quick wit and sarcastic dry sense of humor. His hobbies included frequent trips to Menards, Habitat for Humanity, and buying donuts from the Amish bakery. He was known and loved by his family as Papa.
Bill is survived by his wife Suzanne Knutson, daughter Christine Rediske (Duane), son Kevin Knutson (Kristi), grandchildren Kyle Knutson, Jaren Knutson, and Katie Knutson, two sisters Pam Schaefer (Don) and Sandra Gifford. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Barbara Rosin.
A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held Friday, November 06, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason Street, Onalaska, WI. Military Honors will be conducted by The Onalaska American Legion Post 336 and the United States Navy.
To best celebrate Bill’s life, we recommend making it important to be kind and helpful to others.
