Loyd Dean Mieden 91, of Holmen, died peacefully on May 14th at Bethany Riverside Nursing Home where he had received outstanding care.

He was born on the family farm in Kendall Wisconsin on June 27th 1924 to Emma (Preuss) and Peter Mieden.   Loyd is survived by his sons Steven and his wife Carole McQueen in Holmen  and Greg, his wife Emma (Kaye) in North Carolina and their two children Hillary also in NC and Julia in Madison.

Marrying Marian Lois Wolff in Milwaukee in August 1948, they had 62 years of happiness before she passed in March 2009.  Loyd is also preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings Karl, Robert, Evelyn (Lueck), Ervin and John.

After serving with the Army in World War II, he completed a Bachelors Degree in Education from UW- Milwaukee and subsequently a Masters Degree in Music from UW-Madison.   He taught music in Fond du Lac, Onalaska and La Crosse.   In those schools he devoted his life to teaching music to high school students and elementary children.  Gaining a Fulbright Scholarship, he taught in England for a year before his retirement.

Along with music, Loyd also touched the lives of many through his passion for sewing and weaving.   He designed and made wedding dresses for many local brides and enjoyed being part of and supporting the La Crosse Society of Arts and Crafts with his original weavings.  His “House Of Loyd” pavilion was an annual fixture at the Art Fair on the Green where he displayed his wares and “held court”.

After deciding Seminary was not for him, he made a promise to serve God with the talents he had been given.  He served as Choir Director at First Lutheran in Onalaska. Latterly his  Spiritual home was UCC First Congregational Church in La Crosse.  There he sang in the choir and his weavings grace the Sanctuary.  Thus he fulfilled his promise.

A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church La Crosse on Saturday June 25th at 3 pm.  There will be a visitation beginning at 2pm with a meal to follow the service.

Memorials in lieu of flowers should be sent to Onalaska Foundation for Educational Excellence — The Marian Mieden Scholarship.

Funeral arrangements are being conducted by Coulee Region Cremation Group where there is an online book of condolence.

Condolences
