Louis L. Burgos
Louis Burgos died January 26, 2011 surrounded by loving family at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Tomah.
He was born October 27, 1929 in New York City, to Guadalupe and Dominga Burgos. He joined the U.S. Army and served a tour of as a singer with the U.S. Military Services as entertainment for the troops. He was then sent to active combat in Korea, was wounded and received a Purple Heart.
While recuperating at Fort McCoy in WI, he met Lucille Devine in La Crosse, they married and raised a family of five children together. He worked at Trane Company in La Crosse, attended night classes, working his way from machinist, to a tool-and-die maker and all the way up to Lead Engineer (Honeywell Inc – Coon Rapids, MN) in charge of top government defense projects. At a young age he was known as a talented boxer which he later coached. He was also a professional singer and made recordings in the “crooner” style popular at the time. After the death of his wife Lucille in 2009, he moved back to the La Crosse area, a place he’d always loved.
Louis is survived by one brother, Harry (June) Burgos of Florida, and five children: Patrick (Beth) Burgos of West Salem; Timothy (Jean) Burgos of St. Paul, Minn.; Kellen (Kathy) Burgos of La Crosse; Mara (Kevin) Weglarz of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Tony Burgos of Victoria, Minn.,10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Lou lived his life based on principles of hard work, integrity and self-reliance, and his passion for the richness of life, which included a world filled with music, the beautiful Spanish language, his beloved dogs, and most of all, his family. He will be greatly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2011, 3:30 P.M. at the Oak Grove Cemetery Chapel, 1407 LaCrosse St., LaCrosse. The Reverend Mark Jolivette will officiate. Militiary Honors will be by American Legion Post #52.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Oak Grove Cemetery Chapel on saturday from 2:00 P.M. until the time of the service.
The Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family with the arrangments.
