Obituary

Alana Whitney Jones

September 17, 2025 | 14 comments

We are immensely saddened to announce the passing of our beloved daughter, Alana Whitney Jones, who left us on September 12, 2025, at the age of 31; a short time after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

She was born on March 5, 1994, in La Crosse, WI to John and Kay Jones. Alana was born with cerebral palsy and surpassed all expectations as doctors were not sure that Alana would be able to walk or talk. With early intervention of the Birth to 3 program, Alana made incredible gains and was able to ditch her walker just in time to start Kindergarten. She continued to learn new things every day. Alana was a radiant soul, known for being very sociable, kind, humorous, spunky, and having a love for all animals. As she entered High School, her claim to fame was that she knew every student and staff member. This propelled her school career of Jonesie’s Delivery Service. Alana loved life and enjoyed extreme rollercoasters and waterparks, rocking out with music, dancing, watching her favorite movies, and meeting new friends while shopping at Walmart, Sam’s and Aldi’s.

Alana is survived by her loving parents, John and Kay Jones, her brother, Lawrence Jones, Aunt Kim and Uncle Randy Jewett, Uncle Roger Decot and Grandma Elaine Decot as well as many other beloved family members and friends. She is preceded in death by Grandpa Terry Decot and Grandma Aletha Jones.

The family wishes to thank all teachers, paraprofessionals, Gundersen physicians, nursing staff and therapists that have been involved in Alana’s care since her birth and those from the Medical Oncology and ICU floors who recently joined “Alana’s Party”. We couldn’t have made it this far without you. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Alana’s name to Coulee Region Adult Day Center, an organization that cares for adults with all levels of disabilities.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 pm, Thursday, September 25, 2025, with a memorial service to celebrate Alana’s life beginning at 3:00 pm, at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason, Onalaska, WI 54650.

Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family. Please visit CouleeCremation.com

Alana was a soul full of spunk and forever one of the funniest girls I’ve ever met. I’m forever thankful that I had the opportunity to know her and love her, just as everyone else who met her. Until we meet again, Jonesie 💐

I worked with Alana for several years at the beginning of my career and she taught me so much about what it means to be an educator, friend, advocate, and human. I still tell stories about Alayna on a fairly regular basis and use some of her best catchphrases with my students! She certainly helped me to be the educator I am today and will be greatly missed by many ♥️ John, Kay and Lawrence, you are in my thoughts

ou taught me. Every single day. The years have passed but I never forgot. Patience, grit, intuitiveness, patience, understanding. Have I said patience? You taught me to listen to what you were really saying. Jones… so many laughs, giggles, smiles, moments of pure joy and sometimes, pain. You endured so much. You loved outings, Adaptive PE and not so much the ice fishing but flirting with the boys and the snacks. You could move like lightning when you wanted to. You loved my husband, I was non existent when he was present. I never not looked forward to what ever challenge you were gonna bring me. You made me better Alana. You made us all the better for loving you and knowing you. Rest easy girlfriend.—Hauser

We were saddened to hear of Alana’s passing. Although many years since we have been living on the prairie we have always held the memory of Alana’s visits and her sitting on our front porch in the Queen’s seat. She was a special child for so many people. Her life was filled with the love of her family and I am sure many friendships. May she rest in peace…

How did Alana’s determination and vibrant personality reshape the expectations others had for her—and for what’s possible for individuals with cerebral palsy?
