Barrie Monks

June 19, 2025 | 8 comments

Barrie Monks, 74, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, passed away on June 1, 2025. Born in Manchester, England on March 6, 1951, and raised by Doris and Vincent Monks.

Barrie brought with him a sharp wit, insatiable curiosity, and boundless warmth that left a mark on every life he touched — whether in his hometown or halfway across the world. A lifelong learner, Barrie had a passion for language, geography, and global connection. He was always chasing new knowledge, whether through books, conversation, or travel. An avid plane spotter and enthusiastic traveler, Barrie was most at home on an airport observation deck or planning the next adventure. He was equally passionate about English football — a devoted Manchester United supporter to the end — and cricket, which he loved with equal fervor. Barrie and his son Paul who lived in Manchester, would often watch cricket matches together, virtually. Barrie shared these passions with his family in the most memorable ways: taking each of his children to a Manchester United match, and even bringing Mary, the love of his life, to a football game on their very first date. Together they built a beautiful life in La Crosse, raising three children — Simon, Paul, and Jenna — and welcoming four grandchildren: Jazabelle, Emmy, Sawyer, and Hazel, and bonus grandkids Mason and Kian. Though far from his birthplace, Barrie became a beloved part of the La Crosse community.

He spent years coaching and refereeing youth soccer, making a lasting impact on the local soccer scene with his signature blend of enthusiasm, fairness, and a touch of British charm. His dedication extended into the social fabric of the city through his involvement with the Shamrock Club, where he embraced his wife Mary’s Irish heritage with gusto — despite proudly being “not a lick of Irish” himself. Barrie was the cornerstone of his family — always ready to lend a hand, give advice, or simply share a pint. Our family grill outs, card games around the dining table and drinks at the Bodega will be missing our favorite person. He never met a stranger, and he could — and would — talk to anyone about anything, weaving humor and insight into every conversation.

Barrie is survived by his beloved wife Mary, their children Simon, Paul, and Jenna, and grandchildren Jazabelle, Emmy, Sawyer, and Hazel. Not forgetting the family of cousins left behind who will miss him tremendously. Much beloved Trish, Janet and Jackie in Australia, Barrie’s favorite place he traveled. In Canada, cousins Adrian, Colleen and Leonne. In the U.K. special cousins Steve and Glennis, he was so thankful to reconnect with his biological family, Nephew Jason, Niece Joanne, and cousins Barbara Jane Alison and Sheila. We hope when you think of him you smile. He will be remembered for his quick smile, a constant twinkle in his eye, an open heart, endless curiosity, and the deep love he had for his family and the world around him. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched — in every shared story, every well-worn travel guide, every soccer pitch, and every pint of Guinness raised in his honor. A celebration of life will be held August 3rd from 2 – 6 at Mormon Coulee Community park.  Appetizers and refreshments will be served.  Please reach out on the family’s social media for more information, also we would love you to have a touch of red on your person.

Monk Family – We are so sorry for your loss. We first met Barrie through our three sons’ years and years of soccer. We were always glad to see him on the pitch as he was a fair and knowledgeable referee and coach. His enthusiasm for the game and life was so enjoyable to be around. May you find comfort in all the wonderful memories you made together.

Mary, my thoughts are with you. So glad to have seen the 2 of you at the Shamrock Club Christmas party. Irish or not, he was a great Irishman! I hope that he and Mark are toasting a few Guinness and sharing a bunch of blarney. Hugs to you!❤️

Thoughts and love to Mary and family. Warm, kind, funny and engaging, Barrie lived life as he played and reffed the beautiful game – with passion, enthusiasm and consideration for all. A gentleman, scholar and a heck of a shot stopper.
