Cheryl A. Schmidt (Phillips), aged 79, passed away July 5, 2023, surrounded by family.

Cheryl was born May 30, 1944, grew up in Lynxville, WI and went to Seneca High School.  There she met John Schmidt.  They married June 6, 1962 and lived on the farm in Seneca.  They moved to Mount Sterling, WI, De Soto, WI, Stoddard, WI and settled in Holmen, WI.

Cheryl worked many years in food service, in restaurants in Lansing, IA, then moved on to dietary and housekeeping at Hillview Healthcare Center in La Crosse, where she retired. In her jobs, she made many friends and built several special friendships with her co-workers.

Cheryl and John found great joy in their pet kitties, who they took care of like family.   She was a lifelong lover of landscaping and decorating, and of backyard birds and squirrels, whom she fed well and even fed by hand.

She made countless hand crocheted items for her family and friends; tablecloths, afghans, decor, doilies, baby blankets and newborn hats, and shared her creations with her loved ones.

Cheryl was an incredible cook and loved making and sharing her banana bread and cookies with family, friends and neighbors. Her homemade potato soup, boiled dinner, chicken and “klubb”  and homemade dressing were second to none and she loved preparing Thanksgiving dinner.

Cheryl is survived by her husband,

John Schmidt of Holmen, WI, son Scott (Joan) Schmidt of Holmen, WI and Waukon, IA, son Terry (Tammy) Schmidt of Holmen, WI and daughter Susan Schmidt, La Crosse, WI, grandchildren Carrie (Wesam) Khouj, Tampa,FL, James (Ella) Schmidt, La Crosse, WI, Emily (Shane Steinhoff) Sparta, WI, Morgan Schmidt, La Crosse, WI, Luanne and Rogie Glenna, La Crosse, WI, Jordan and Jesse Aylsworth and great grandchildren Hamza, Rose, Thorin, Roman, Atticus, Bennett, Asher and Evelynn.

Her memorial service will be held on Monday, July 17, 2023 at 11:00 am at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason St., Onalaska.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.  Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family.

    Farewell my Friend.
I cherish the special memories of shared times long past — the sleepovers, study(?)hall, and those ‘boyfriend’ secrets.
May you rest in peace as you live on in the hearts of your family and friends.

It seems only yesterday that Cheryl and I, with John and other family shared memories, some lunch, and time together in Holmen. Very glad for that time of sharing, talking with family, and looking at old pictures and sharing some memories from days gone by. Sincere condolences to all the families.
