David Cleveland

June 20, 2024 | 19 comments

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dave Cleveland on June 14, 2024. Dave peacefully left this world surrounded by his loving family. His unwavering strength and courage throughout his battle will forever inspire us.

Dave was born on September 27, 1944, in Owatonna, Minnesota, to Marjorie (Hansen) and Arlyss Cleveland. His journey was marked by dedication, love, and memorable moments.

Following graduation from High School, he attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis.  Dave then enlisted in the Air Force. As a Sergeant, he served as an Operating Room Specialist from July 1, 1966, to February 25, 1970. He was very proud of his service to his country.

On September 26, 1981, Dave married his best friend, Sharon (Fuchs). Their 42 years of marriage were filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Dave adored being a father to Sam and Sarah, and his three grandchildren—Bentley, Brexton, and Briella—brought immense joy to his life.

Dave’s career took various paths in Property and Casualty insurance. He started as an underwriter at Federated Insurance in Owatonna, then relocated to Onalaska, WI, to explore sales opportunities. Eventually, he landed his dream job as a Marketing Representative, allowing him to travel across the Midwest. Occasionally, he brought his kids along on work trips, creating cherished memories.

In retirement, Dave enjoyed simple pleasures: watching birds on his deck, enjoying a Leinies, and sharing laughter with family. His flare for sarcasm endeared him to those who knew him best. He regaled stories of travels, including a memorable Yellowstone vacation with Sarah and Amanda, and trips to Houston, Texas, to visit Sam’s family.

Dave leaves behind his wife, Sharon; son Sam and daughter-in-law Katie; daughter Sarah and her wife, Amanda Tomczak; grandchildren, Bentley, Brexton, and Briella; cousins Jean Lewis and Steve Hansen; and brothers-in-law Jim (Julie), Dick (Judy), and Gregg (Karen) Fuchs.

He was preceded in death by his mother Marjorie Kemp, his father Arlyss Cleveland, his father and mother-in-law, Joe and Catherine Fuchs, and his cousin Rick Hansen.

In accordance with Dave’s wishes, there will be no formal service. He will be interred at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery on his next birthday. Coulee Region Cremation Group, 133 Mason Street, Onalaska, WI 54650 is assisting Dave’s family. Condolences can be sent to Coulee Region Cremation Group.

    Dear Sharon, Sam and Sarah,
We were sorry to hear about Dave’s battle with cancer and so sorry for your loss this week. It doesn’t seem very long ago that Sam and Brian were in the Civil Air Patrol together and Sarah and Laura were doing rollerblading tricks in the driveway. Dave will be missed in the neighborhood. Our hearts go out to you at this time, as well as our prayers.

My deepest sympathies to Sharon, Sam and Sarah. Dave was a dear friend. We shared many laughs over the years at golf outings, education seminars, and conventions. We seemed to think we were responsible for some world events when we were together (the onset of the gulf war, the attempted Russian coup against Gorbachov). Dave was just a great guy and true gentleman.

I’ll always remember Dave as a person of skilled detail in his career – but with a camera ready smile and big laugh whether in person or even over the phone . . . and a voice I always wish I had.

From our 1st meeting as he was just moving into his 1st LaX office and after, he was always ready to work, talk, or joke – but always dressed to golf. And he certainly seemed to fit well to being married to the girl of his dreams – and worked to come home to that dream every evening.

My deepest sympathies to Sharon, Sam and Sarah. Dave was a good man & I enjoyed working alongside of him back in the 90’s. Unfortunately, I haven’t bumped into him for many years. May you all find comfort in knowing that he is now in peace. Prayers to you all.

I was stationed with Dave at Altus Air Force Base at Altus, Oklahoma in 1966 and 1967. Dave talked about his Pontiac GTO that he said was in storage back in Minnesota. Dave was a funny guy who knew more limericks than anyone I ever met. He and I along with two other guys would pile into my Opel Kadet most Friday nights, pick up a case of beer from the PX and drive off base to a secluded spot on a rural gravel road. There we’d listen to rock ‘n roll on KOMA, an AM station from Oklahoma City as we enjoyed our beer, and sang along to the songs. Good times with a good friend. Cecil Davis
