David Michael Shafer
“Fuzzy”
June 25, 1963 – November 1, 2025
David “Fuzzy” Shafer passed away suddenly on Saturday, November 1, 2025. He was born on June 25, 1963, in Red Wing, Minnesota — though he’d probably want everyone to know that was just a technicality, since he was a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan through and through.
Fuzzy was the beloved son of the late Robert M. Shafer and Jeannine G. Shafer. He is survived by his mother, his children, Nicole G. Shafer and Conner M. Shafer, and his granddaughter, Nalani J. Wittenberg. He also leaves behind his sisters, Debra (Shafer) Moran and Dawn (Shafer) Koca; two nieces, Colleen and Megan Moran, and can’t forget his chocolate lab, Ms. Hershey; as well as his extended family and countless friends who loved him like their own.
He graduated from Green Mountain High School in Jefferson County, Colorado. After high school, like his father, Fuzzy worked for the BNSF Railroad, where he spent 40 years working as a conductor — a career he was proud of and retired from at the age of 58. His coworkers and friends will remember him for his humor, loyalty, and that unmistakable laugh that could fill a room.
Fuzzy was truly one of a kind — the life of every gathering and the reason people’s cheeks hurt from laughing. He loved to fish, hunt, and spend time outdoors. If there was a grill nearby, he was in charge of it, usually with a joke in one hand and a spatula in the other. And when the Packers were playing, you could bet he’d be yelling at the TV like they could hear him.
He had a way of making everyone around him feel welcome, smile bigger, and laugh harder. He will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him — but his spirit, stories, and laughter will never be forgotten.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 14th at 12:00 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason Street, Onalaska, WI, followed by burial. Family and friends are invited for an open-casket visitation from 10:30 A.M till the time of the service. In honor of Fuzzy, we ask you to wear your favorite Hawaiian Shirt and a hat with a funny saying if you’d like.
In true Fuzzy fashion — one last time… “Security!”

Rest easy Ole boy.
I’m grateful to have seen David and son Connor this past summer. We had a nice visit. He has a “fun, mischievous” smile that I will remember. Wish I had known him better🥲.
I didn’t know him well, but I do know that he was very good at attending various family gatherings. The last time I saw him was at Mary’s Celebration of Life and family get together at Vino in the Valley last summer. We spoke for a bit and he introduced me to his son, Conner. David had a very friendly and personable personality. It sounds like he loved life and lived it to the fullest. Sending our condolences to all who loved him.
Hey David, I’m currently at a loss for words right now, but I wanted to thank you for accepting me in your home. Thank you for your patience and kindness. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to meet you and spend time with you and your family. As you’re looking down on this world I ask you to watch over your kids and guide every step of the way. You will be missed. RIH David
