Surviving siblings are Sharon (Mack) Pruitt of California, Marilyn (Larry) Springer of Ankeny Iowa, Linda (Dan) Barfield of Ankeny Iowa, James Standiford of Iowa, and John Standiford of Texas.
He is survived by his two daughters, Cheryl (Dale) Dennison of La Crosse and Judy (Joe) Van Voorhis of Cocoa Florida, Grandchildren: Tennille Osthoff and husband Tad Boardman of Genoa, Daniel Osthoff of La Crosse and Nathan Van Voorhis of Madison and Great Grandchildren Carmen, Valerie, Pelara, Emma and Ella. David also had a special road trip partner, Karen Kaiser.
Dave worked as a roofer for 40 years. He spent most of his life in the Onalaska/Holmen area. He had many interests over the years, as you could find him as a fan at the La Crosse Speedway, attending a tractor pull, supporting his local legion or festivals, prepping for his next smelt fishing trip, or in his garage refurbishing a tractor or shining up his prized fire truck. David took great pride in restoring several tractors, especially John Deer tractors. It wasn’t unusual to see Dave driving his antique fire truck in local parades, and he often decorated it with colorful lights.
Dave’s volunteer work was well known. The American Legion Post 336 in Onalaska recognized Dave as an Honorary member due to his continued contributions. Over his 90 years he made many long-lasting friendships and after retirement enjoyed making his rounds to see those friends at many local establishments, such as: Sam’s, L&M’s, Scoreboard, and the Holmen and Onalaska legions.
In any neighborhood Dave lived in… the wildlife and him quickly became friends. He enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels, and took great pleasure in feeding the occasional deer, fox or raccoon. Dave’s CATS however, were really his first love; some might say he was a “Cat Whisperer”. David was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
The family would like to thank Pleasant Valley Assisted Living and St. Croix Hospice for the excellent care and companionship they provided. Dave very much enjoyed a good game of checkers with staff/residents and remains the Checkers Champ.
A celebration of life will be held at Sam’s Bar 2116 George Street La Crosse on March 22nd from 1-3pm.
We are blessed to have had the opportunity to know Dave. His life will be a memory we will all forever treasure.
Thank you very much.
He really enjoyed living there.
Your staff was always very helpful to me and Dad.
