Brice Prairie lost it’s true Mountain Man! A man of few words, but so much knowledge. The admiration for his wife Martha and family was always visible.
I can see Pete and Donnie reuniting and Don being the responsible one. Rest in peace.

Martha and family. May you find peace and comfort knowing Don would want you to. I’ve known Don since high school days and his brothers and sisters. Fred and Audrey were wonderful parents who loved each and every one of you kids. The Johnson homestead is a landmark on the Prairie, the rustic log homes built by the family are a representation of the love of the land. Martha may God bless you during this difficult time, the Johnson family is in my prayers.

Martha and family and close ones, my heart goes out to you. I’ll be forever indebted to Don and Fred for inviting my father and me to deer camp up to Jump River back in the 60s. A truer deer camp would have been tough to find, and I would never have known Jump River Rose. Have known Don since 4th grade, when I recall he was the champion Pixie Pickup Stix picker upper of Oak Grove School. Throughout junior and senior high school I always admired Don for his intelligence and poise. Good friends Don and Martha were and that friendship continued all our lives. Don sometimes appeared like a ghost out in the bottoms when I thought I was all by myself. Once when I was camped in the waybacks he and Fred come running up this slough and caught me cooling off in the water. From a distance he told me they thought I was a big beaver and had to check me out. Another time in the waybacks I was duck hunting this pothole and took forever to talk this mallard into landing in the decoys. When I sent the dog to retrieve he started clapping and gave me the thumbs up. Put the sneak on me is what he did. When I was in the area I’d stop in and visit. Always a peaceful time catching up on what was new. Don’s love for his children and grandchildren always came out in the many conversations we had over the years. I’ll forever miss our friendship. Tales of hunting, fishing and trapping will be shared again sometime. Goodbye old friend. Mike Widner
