Obituary

Donald Vincent Magnuson

Donald Vincent Magnuson, age 91 of La Crosse, WI passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 30th at Eagle Crest South Assisted Living of La Crosse, WI.  He was born on March 22, 1925 in Chicago, IL to Gustav and Signe (Rosell) Magnuson.  He married Jeanne Mae Pfeiffer on October 9, 1948 in Chicago, IL.  They had four children: Signe, Paul, Lois, and Roy. Jeanne passed away on August 16, 1973. He married Ruth Olson on July 21, 1989 in La Crosse, WI and became step-father to her three children: Kaia, Ola, and Per.

Don served in the Navy from August 1944 to 1946. After leaving the navy he completed his BS in Chemistry from IIT, began a job designing laboratory equipment (LabLine), and later obtained his MBA from University of Chicago. He went on to work in manufacturing management (Structoglass and Norplex), and finally as a stock broker (Baird). Before moving to La Crosse in 1968, Don lived in Tennessee from 1959 to 1967 and then briefly in Ohio and Illinois.

Don enjoyed sailing, biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, and playing tennis with Vintage Sport Limited (VSL) where he was active well into his later years.  Don also enjoyed traveling, oftentimes taking large groups of his children and grandchildren on vacations around the country and the world.  He continued traveling with his wife, Ruth, for many years after his children and grandchildren had families of their own, ending his travels with a trip to Cuba in 2012.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Olson, seven children Signe Spencer, Paul Magnuson (Susan Safronoff), Lois (Harsha) Ramalingam, Roy (Suzy) Magnuson, Kaia Lee(Dan Seefelt), Ola (Vanessa) Lee, and Per (Kaydee) Lee; seventeen grandchildren Kirsta, Emily (Adam), Julia (Robert), Elisa, Kay (Claus), BJ (Nicole), Eric, Mario, Claire, Kjetil, Haakon, Kalle, Lars, Mason, Isabella, McKenna, and Scarlett; three great grandchildren Rose, Ella, and Alice.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Signe Magnuson, his brother Stanley Magnuson, his first wife Jeanne (Pfeiffer) Magnuson, and nephew Robert Magnuson.

A service will be held on April 5, 2016 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 701 Wells Street, Onalaska, WI 54650. There will be a visitation from 10 to 11 o’clock am followed by a service at 11 o’clock and a luncheon immediately after the service.  The family requests that donations be made to Salvation Army in memory of Don.
