Obituary

Edwin “Ed” Quall

July 22, 2023 | 12 comments

Edwin P Quall, 53 passed away on June 5, 2023 at his home in Woodbridge, Virginia.  Ed was a loved son, a brother, an uncle, a friend and colleague.  Edwin or as we called him Ed was born on October 5, 1969 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  Ed grew up in Galesville, Wisconsin and graduated from Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School in 1987. Ed was a dedicated individual, to his family, his country and his job.  He joined the Marines after high school and he served in Desert Storm.  He was a proud Marine and he loved his country.  After his time in the Marines Ed returned to the Midwest and earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and computer science.

After earning his degree he moved to the Washington DC area in 2002 and secured a job working for the Department of Justice-Interpol.  Ed’s family came to learn from his “work family” that he was Edwin – it was recognized by many that Ed gave of himself entirely – he was all in. At the time of his passing, Ed served as an Assistant Director in the Interpol Operations and Command Center.  It was shared by his coworkers that he was a “generous coworker, mentor and teacher.  He was a fair boss and often more comfortable in the trenches of the Command Center doing the work rather than talking about it.”  It was also shared with us that hundreds of people around the country, interns, contractors, staff and detailed law enforcement officers benefited from working with Edwin – whether through training, mentoring, technical expertise, intelligent guidance, kind advice, and heartfelt friendship, the impact of his loss is shared by many. In his work he was able to be a part of many cases solved and impact the lives of people who he never met and never would, but that is exactly the type of person he was – helping others and making the work a better place.  The family is very thankful for the connection and the role that those he worked with played in his life.

Ed was looking forward to retirement, hoping that in the near future he would be returning to the midwest to be closer to his family.  On the rare occasions we would have him back in the Midwest he enjoyed spending time with his family. Sharing with us often all he had learned about and added to his research on the family tree.  He will be missed by the many lives that he touched over the years.

Left to mourn his passing are his siblings, Laurie Murray, Pam Bisek, Lisa (Laverne) Massman, Darcy (Bobby) Russell and Mark Quall, as well as many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lillian Quall  and brothers, Steven and Greg, sister, Denise and nephew Josh.

Time – we always want more!  Our loss was unexpected and painful, however time can not erase our memories or change our image of the person who we knew and loved.  Ed will always be remembered as a dedicated, giving and thoughtful person – Ed you are loved and missed!

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held Saturday, August 19, 2023 at the Gathering Place, 133 Mason Street, Onalaska. Friends and family may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. Military honors will follow at 12:45 p.m. with a luncheon at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to your local American Legion.

To the family of Edwin Quall:

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Edwin was a loving member of the INTERPOL Washington family and a dear mentor of mine. When I started as an intern in 2018, Edwin took me under his wing, trained me, and advocated for me to be able to continue my career there. I would not be where I am today without his support, sense of humor, and guidance.

I will never forget all the times when Edwin called me into his office, sat back in his chair, asked me to translate a message, made a joke about said message, and then showed me his new Invictus watches. After these encounters, all I could do was smile, as talking to Edwin was always a highlight of my day. I know that his family and coworkers will miss his charisma and spirit. I am honored to have had him in my professional life, and I wish his loving family all the best.

    With Love,

    Alexandra Helwig

With heartfelt condolences to Edwin Quall’s family:
I lost my father suddenly as well and I know what you are going through during this difficult time.
Edwin for me was who I call, one of the best bosses and mentors I had in my career with the government.
His dry humor and sarcasm, yet kindhearted and his will to always help people who work for him or have worked for him were few of the things that defined Ed, who Ed is professinally.
Just like you, I will miss Edwin, our talks about family, politics, religion, and everything in between.
Know that Ed was loved by everyone at work, he loved everyone in return and always had our backs, no matter what and what cost. But most importantly, he loved you, his family in WI, he couldn’t stop talking about his nephews and nieces and what presents he will buy for them this Christmas.
Although still in shock and very sad of his passing, as we all are, I am comforted that Ed is a better place, heaven.
I am grateful to have had known Edwin, and happy to have had him as my boss and mentor. Just like you, I will cherish the memories I had with Edwin professionally working for him.
It will never be another Edwin!!!!!
I will keep you in my prayers for comfort and healing.

I’m so sorry for your loss. We loved having your family as our neighbors and appreciate your family selling us the land so that we could build near your family. We remember Ed when he was young and he was always a thoughtful and kind person. I know your family was extremely proud of Ed and your time with him was cut short. Sorry. Bruce & Sheryl Reedy

I am so very sorry for your loss!
I first remember “Eddy” from Sunday School as an eight-year old boy. He was rambunctious and funny. I, of course, heard his name from time to time – he was a classmate of my son’s. You will be missed, Ed!

To the family of Edwin Quall:
I have been thinking a lot on what to write. To me, ED was a mentor, father figure, friend and a shinny light in the darkness. I miss him, every time I step into that place. Today whatever I am it’s because of him. He will be in my thoughts and prayers as I long as I am alive. Rest in Peace!

Dear Cousins – I was so sorry to hear of Eddie’s passing (always Eddie to me because we knew each other best as kids). I regret I could not attend his Celebration of Life in person, but thank you for the opportunity to attend via Zoom. His ceremony was very moving – the love he had for you and you for him was very evident. I wish you peace and happiness. Susan (Priem)

Ed was a colleague and dear friend, we worked together for a few years and hit it off because we were both from the Midwest and the USMC. I enjoyed working with Ed, he was such a great person and of course we loved to chat about the Midwest, football, retirement and going back home. This was such a shock to hear of his passing, he will be missed as he did touch many lives with his positive and caring nature. My deepest condolences to Ed’s family, you will all be in my prayers.

I was so saddened to hear of Ed’s passing. He was an awesome INTERPOL Washington colleague and brother Marine. I pray for his family. God has another Marine to guard the streets of Heaven. Semper Fidelis, Friend.

I am so saddened to have just discovered that Edwin passed away last summer. We first met at St. Cloud State as we were pursuing our criminal Justice masters degrees. I met him through James Parlow and I quickly bonded with them. Ed was so bright and had awesome opportunities back then of his naval investigations internship and getting hired quickly after graduating with Interpol. I had seen him a few times after that whenever I was in DC at a conference or when I eventually moved to the DC area for my career. He even showed me the Interpol operations. Unfortunately we didn’t stay in touch even though I would occasionally think that I needed to track him down and reconnect. I have such fond memories of him as such a relaxed and friendly (true midwestern) spirit. Now we all have another Angel to talk to in heave. Peace be with you Ed and your family. Much love.
