Frederick John McLevich
Frederick John (Fred) McLevich , 96, passed away on July 2, 2012.
He was born in St Paul, MN on February 8, 1916 to Frederick and Louise ( Reitmeier) McLevich.
He married the love of his life, Margaret Carlson on November 16 , 1940 and they were married for 68 years until the time of her death in 2008.
Fred had an incredible work ethic and a devotion to his family. At age seven, he worked all summer in a truck garden, giving a share of his earnings to his mother and saving the rest to buy himself his first bicycle. At fifteen he caddied at Midland Hills Golf Course which started his interest in golf.
During WWII Fred was stationed in Japan. Proud to have served his country, he was honored to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. as a member of the Freedom Honor Flight in 2010.
Fred was Staff Manager for Prudential Insurance Company La Crosse office until his retirement in 1976. During retirement Fred and Margaret spent winters golfing in Fort Walton Beach, Florida and summers between La Crosse golf courses and their little red cottage on Lake Eau Claire.
Fred’s passion was golf and he was proud of the fact that he was able to play for 81 years. He has had many accomplishments in golf. In addition to trophies and awards he has had four holes in one and has shot his age or lower ever since he was 71 years old. He was always willing to help fellow golfers with pointers on how to improve their game. In 2009 he was featured in the segment 93 And Still Golfing on News Channel 8’s In Search Of… with Jennifer Livingston.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents and brother Raymond.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Louise and John Dietsch and many nieces and nephews, and by his children;
Madreanne Woolley, of LaCrosse, Sally McLevich, of Milwaukee, Rosemary (Will) Valentine of West Salem and Fred ( Mary Kay) McLevich of Green Lake, WI/ Big Pine Key, FL
Grandchildren: Krissa (Kevin) Harnish, Adam (Jenny) Woolley, Heather (Scott Lambert), Nick Valentine and Rick McLevich
Great-Granchildren: Killian and Kieran Harnish, Deston and Nora Woolley and Annika and Reese Lambert.
The family would like to thank his golfing buddies Fred Rohrer and Don Olson for their friendship , and the Gundersen Lutheran Hospice team for their care and comfort.
In accordance with Fred’s wishes he will be cremated. A private family service will be
held at a later date. Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family.
His children and grandchildren will always remember his beautiful voice as he tucked them into bed singing the Irish Lullaby, Toora Loora, and as the song says, ” I would give the world if he could sing this song to me today”.
