Obituary

Gordon Dale Mengelt Jr.

October 1, 2025 | 0 comments

Our beloved Gordon Dale Mengelt Jr passed away on the evening of September 25, 2025, at home with his wife Jean lovingly by his side.  Gordie leaves Jean and his only son Ethan and his wife Katlyn who have two grandchildren (twins who he dearly wanted to meet) on their way soon.

Gordie was preceded in death by his father (Gordon Dale Mengelt Senior) and also leaves behind his mother Sherrell Greeno, sisters and brothers Barbara Lambert, Kathy Walker, Debra Johnson, Christopher Mengelt, Lisa Mengelt, John Mengelt and Mark Greeno as well as many other relatives and friends.  His many nieces and nephews will also miss Uncle Gordie. A big shoutout to Uncle Jack and his family who meant the world to Gordie.

Our Gordie had a very full life even though at a young age he was disabled, and it is difficult for any of his family to put into words his many contributions to our lives so we leave you with a poem that Gordie had written a number of years ago.

So Much More

My disability robbed me of so much but gave me so much more.

I couldn’t walk much, but I could laugh at myself so much more.

I was very naïve about all life had in store for me until December 31, 1988, then I found out there was so much more.

My wife is a spectacular person, our bond always growing stronger.

It can’t get better than this I thought, then came May 29th, 2000, Oh there was so much more.

I just wanted to be a better father than mine was, but I needed to be so much more.

I said I love you to my son every day, but what was required was so much more.

My son, my son, we hoped to raise you right, but you became so much more.

I am so proud of you for treating everyone with so much kindness and equality but not seeing my disability and just being dad meant so much more.

I was very shy and uncomfortable around groups, those who truly knew me realized there was so much more.

My life has been a blessing because of my family and friends but what God has in store for me now is so much more.

Until we meet again.

A remembrance of Gordie’s life will be held on Saturday October 11th starting at 11 am in the Town of Holland at an outside venue behind the Town Hall.  Dress for the weather and prepare to have a thanksgiving meal – Gordie’s favorite holiday.  This is an informal event and a time to share stories of Gordie and how our lives connected. These stories will be shared on the day and by Ethan and Katlyn with their future son and daughter.

There are recreational facilities in the area for adults and children.  All are welcome!

Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family during this difficult time.
