WEST SALEM – Helaine Sarauer, 60, of West Salem passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at home surrounded by her loved ones, after living with health issues for over 30 years.

Helaine was born on June 15, 1963, in Wausau to Gordon and Barabara Sarauer. After graduating from West Salem High School Helaine attended Cosmetology School in Eau Claire. She started out as a hair stylist at Barb’s Hair Salon, throughout her career she worked at the Flair Hairstyling, Scot-Lewis, and rented a station at Bellissimo. She also enjoyed teaching students at the Scot-Lewis School of Cosmetology sharing with them her passion of being a hair stylist. When Helaine was young, she had wanted to become a nun and she found her dream job working with the sisters at the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration for seventeen years.

Helaine enjoyed traveling with friends to warm locations enjoying the sun and the adventures they had. Helaine had a soft spot for her furry friends, treating each one like the valuable family member they were. She rehabilitated and saved many cats throughout the years.

Helaine is survived by her father Gordon; her siblings: Paul (Becky) Sarauer and Donella Sarauer; stepsiblings Tricia (Timothy) Gappa, Michael (Danielle) Bluske, Jeffrey (Trisha) Bluske; nieces and nephew: Alex (Austin) Gunderson, Danyelle Hart, Destinee Hart, and Paula Sarauer; including many great-nieces and nephews. Many supportive aunts, uncles, and cousins; along with special friends Deb, Liz, and Rita.

She was preceded in death by her mother Barbara Sarauer; stepmother Cindy Sarauer; uncles Louis Zaruba and Roger Hespenheide; grandparents Delmar and Lorraine Sarauer, Raymond and Helen Knox. Many beloved pets.

A service will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, January 13, 2024, to celebrate Helaine’s life at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason Street, Onalaska, WI. Visitation will be from 11:00am-12:00pm. Private internment of her ashes will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Coulee Region Humane Society, FSPA or an organization of your choice.
