James Patrick Ollila

James Patrick Ollila of La Crosse, age 77, passed away peacefully on February 29, 2012, at home.

He was born on December 9, 1934, to Uno Ollila and Lya Numinen. He married Sue Ann Nyquist on January 26, 1957, in Escanaba, Michigan. James graduated from John D. Pierce High School and Northern Michigan University – Marquette. He served honorably in the U. S. Navy. He taught at Northern Michigan University and Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Michigan. His interests included golf, fishing, and antiquing. Through thick and thin, he was an avid Detroit Lions and Tigers fan.

James is survived by his wife, Sue of La Crosse, his daughters Patti (Dave) Vigness, of La Crosse, and Terry (Alan) Steege, of Ironwood, Michigan, and his son Roger (Kellie) Ollila, of Mainville, Ohio; his grandchildren Adam (Erin), Heather (PJ), Joshua (Melanie), Alex, Brian, Sara, and Nick; his three great-grandchildren, Abby, Emma and Conley; his brother Paul (Joyce) Ollila of Painsdale, Michigan; his sister Joanne Pierce of Chicago; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers-in-law, William Nyquist and Charles Pierce.

The family wishes to thank Gundersen Lutheran’s doctors, staff, and hospice, with special thanks to Dr. Kurt Oettel and his entire staff.

Come share your memories with Jim’s family and friends at the Campbell Community Center at 617 Plainview Road, French Island, on Sunday, March 4, from 1:30 to 5:00 p. m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to North American Squirrel Association (N.A.S.A.) to enable others to experience the fun of fishing that Jim enjoyed so much.

Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family.
