Janet Eileen Trujillo
Janet Eileen (Lukert) Trujillo was born August 23, 1952 in Riverhead, New York to William John Lukert and Virginia Lee (Wilcox) Lukert. She passed away at Benedictine Manor with hospice care in La Crosse, WI at the age of 70 on June 17, 2023.
Janet was raised in East Moriches, New York where she developed a passion for horses and swimming, and a love of family, baking, and crafts. Janet was confirmed in the Episcopalian Church in 1965 and graduated from Center Moriches High School in 1970.
In 1973 Janet moved to San Francisco, CA where she was employed at the Park’n Shop grocery store. Here, she met Joseph Bernard Trujillo, whom she married on September 11, 1975. They have been life partners for 47 years. Their daughter, Sheri Trujillo, who has special needs, has been the love of their lives. As well as being a devoted mom and advocate for Sheri, Janet continued her career, shifting from retail to finance, working for the Anheuser Busch Credit Union.
The family moved to Colorado in the late 1990’s to be close to Joe’s parents. Canon City became their new home town. Janet continued her banking career at Sun West Credit Union for 17 years, first as a teller, later as a Loan Officer and finally as the Branch Manager. After retiring from Sun West, Janet worked as the Executive Director for the Senior Services Solutions Plus nonprofit in Canon City through the spring of 2022.
Her community volunteer work included Starpoint, the Kiwanis Club of Royal Gorge in Canon City, Habitat for Humanity of Fremont County, Loaves and Fishes Ministry of Fremont County, and the Orchard of Hope Foundation. Janet was also known for her creative flower arrangements which were very popular, especially for the holidays.
Janet and Joe moved to La Crosse, WI in June 2022, to be close to her mother and sister. She worked at TJ Max part time and volunteered at the Cass Street Assisted Living, where her mother lives.
Janet is survived by her husband, Joe Trujillo; daughter, Sheri Trujillo; mother, Lee Wilcox; sister, Sharon Lukert and her niece Allison Lukert; nephew Kale Williams and great-niece Scarlett Schulte. She was preceded in death by her father, William (Bill) Lukert.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Rick and Robyn Davenport, Sheri’s caregivers and Yvonne Bustos of Starpoint for making a miraculous trip happen to bring Sheri to Wisconsin for a final visit during Janet’s illness. Thank you also to Gundersen Health System for making that visit so special, and to the kind staff of Gundersen Hospice and Benedictine Manor for assisting Janet to rest comfortably in her final days.
Janet will be remembered for her generous heart, and her devotion and care for Sheri and Joe, her family and friends, and all those she met personally and professionally. In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial donation to Starpoint. Condolences can be sent to: Joe Trujillo, 2091 Abbey Road, Apt. 114, Onalaska, WI 54650.
