Obituary

John Andrew Fisher

John Andrew Fisher, 58, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 3, 2015 at home following a courageous battle with ALS.  He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on July 7, 1957to Urban and Therese Fisher.   John lived a very wholesome and active life and enjoyed swimming, bicycling, his vegetable garden, cooking and the great outdoors.  He received his B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife from Michigan State University, and a dual Masters in Environmental Sciences and Public Affairs from Indiana University.  John served as President of the La Crosse City/County Harbor Commission, was an adult leader with the Gateway Council Boy Scouts of America, and a volunteer with the La Crosse area Outdoor Recreation Alliance.  He had been employed as an environmental scientist by Shaw Environmental Services, and later was co-owner and President of Nature’s Way Arborist Services, LLC.

 

He is survived by his son Evan who he loved dearly.  John was especially blessed with the enduring kindness, care, and compassion of his loving partner and best friend, Julie Dietz.  John is also survived by his parents, Urban A. (Bud) and Therese (Tess) Fisher; siblings Mark (Betsy) Fisher, Matt (Sharon) Fisher, Maura (Mike) Malik, and Bob (Betsy) Fisher; sister-in-law Denise (Vic) Fisher; many nieces and nephews, two aunts, an uncle, and many cousins.  John was preceded in death by his brother Michael and sister-in-law Claire.  A mass of Christian burial will be held at the Roncalli Newman Parish, 1732 State Street, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on Friday December 11 at 3pm.   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wisconsin ALS Chapter, Gateway Chapter Boy Scouts of America, the La Crosse Outdoor Recreation Alliance, The Tree Fund (a national organization for urban forestry research and education) or Gundersen Medical Foundation.  A special thank you for the excellent care John received from the entire staff of Gundersen Clinic/Hospital and exceptional support from the La Crosse ALS support group.

Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family.

    We were so sorry to learn of John’s death. He was a great and loving dad and an all-round super guy.
    Our grandson Alex attended Emerson Elementary with Evan from preschool thru part of 4th grade.
    We appreciated knowing John, and we are sure he will be missed by all.

    I am so sorry to hear of johns passing, my son, Collin played soccer with Evan and Matt Dietz, John was a great guy, and so lucky to have found Julie. I am so sad for all of you, Rip John
