Jolene Elizabeth Schmitz Vieth

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Jolene Schmitz Vieth on August 12, 2025 at the age of 91. She passed away peacefully at Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse, surrounded by her loving family.

Jolene Elizabeth Vieth was born July 31, 1934 in Cashton, WI. She was the daughter of Alfred and Lorna Schmitz.

She graduated from Sparta High School. She became well known in the community from her many years working as a clerk at Jackson Drug Store in Sparta.

She was an avid bowler for many years. She enjoyed holiday crafting and loved making and sending greeting cards to her family and friends. She never missed a birthday, or anniversary. The cards she sent were full of creativity and a lot of love. She was an enthusiastic sports fan. You would often find her with family, watching and cheering on Wisconsin sports teams. The Brewers gave her a great send off with a big win the night she passed away. She enjoyed Wednesday pie day and getting together with neighbors, friends and family for lunch and dinner.

She was a member of St. Mary’s/Mayo auxiliary for many years. She also helped plan several Sparta High School Reunions.

She is survived by her children, Terry Hansen of Grafton, WI, Lori Jones (Dick) of Onalaska, WI, and Jill Schroeder (Steve} of Sparta, WI.

She also leaves behind her six grandchildren. Jeremy Rickert, Jessalynn Hietpas, Jenna Kieffer, Jay Schroeder, Lisa Lavery and Kevin Jones. Along with eight great­ grandchildren, Lucas Rickert, Delaney Rickert, Hailey Hietpas, Kamden Kieffer, Nolan Lavery, Asher Lavery, Scarlett Lavery, and Henry Jones.

She is also survived by her sister, Arlene Lambert.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Vieth, her parents Alfred and Lorna Schmitz, and her brothers Cyril Schmitz and LeRoy Schmitz.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 6, at 10:00 am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sparta. There will be a luncheon at the church following the service. Private family burial will be held later in the day.

Visitation at St. Patrick’s Church, Sparta on Friday September 5, 2025, from 3:00 until the 5:30 vigil prayer service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Patrick’s Church in Sparta, or Sparta Area Cancer Support, in her memory.

She was a constant source of optimism, kindness, and grace. She was the most thoughtful and gentle spirit whose love was unwavering, and unconditional. We will forever cherish the love she shared and the memories she gifted each of us. She will always hold a special place in our hearts.
