Obituary
June Lavonne Rose Mahoney
June Lavonne Rose Mahoney passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 24, 1938 in La Crosse, WI to LeRoy and Inga (Peterson) Rose. The family moved around, living in Illinois, Minnesota, Arizona and California, but later settled on Indian Hill in La Crosse. Her father passed away in 1955. Her mother eventually remarried to Rudy South. She attended Logan High School, Western Technical College, and UWL. On July 10, 1957 she married Paul Mahoney.
June and Paul “Joe” were the proud parents of 4 children, Sue, Jeff, Barb, and Kim. Over the years they enjoyed golfing with friends at Pine Creek and Ettrick Golf Courses. They spent many years camping and traveling in their RV, wintering in Texas with family and friends. They were both long-time members of the La Crosse Eagles Club 1254. June kept active planning and attending family reunions, Church Circles, and volunteering at Hillview Healthcare Center. She especially enjoyed the Hacket Reunion in Wisconsin Dells, and the annual Rose Picnic and Peterson Picnic hosted in the La Crosse area. June was an avid sports fan and followed all the professional Wisconsin sports teams and the Wisconsin Badgers. If she couldn’t get a game on TV, she found it on the radio. Joe passed away in 2008, but June reconnected with her high school sweetheart, Robert “Bob” Miles. They spent 15 years together going for drives, playing scratch off tickets, and watching wildlife at Goose Island. Bob passed away in 2023.
June’s favorite role in life was being devoted to her family. She was a loving mom, aunt, great-aunt, Granny, and Great-Granny. She made it a point to attend as many family events as possible, and was always in the crowd cheering on her grandchildren at whatever activity they were in. She also kept many family traditions going strong and made sure the family got together every Christmas to make traditional Norwegian and Irish cookies. June loved visiting with family and friends. The Irish Goodbye was not June’s strong suit. It took her hours to leave a gathering, and she made sure to thank and hug everyone multiple times.
She is survived by her step-brother, Bill (Terri) South; three of her children, Sue Gehri, Jeff (Becky) Mahoney, Barb (Brian) Brooks; Son-in-law Mark (Cate) Hollowitsch; Grandchildren, Michael (Heidi) Gehri, Amy (Cory) Freehill, Jake (Leah) Mahoney, Jenna (Hannah) Mahoney, Melissa Brooks, Colleen (Scott) Serum, Mackenzie (Jamey Wing) Hollowitsch, and Morgan Roach; Great-grandchildren, Logan, Alex, Jack, Brody, Jude, Amelia, Carter, Natalie, Alden, and Catherine. She is furthered survived by numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather, her siblings, Gloria (Stanley) Kuecker, Leon (Margaret) Rose, and Marlin Rose; her husband, Joe; Joe’s parents Paul and Charlotte Mahoney; Sister-in-law, Alice (Don) Wilson; her dear friend, Bob; and her beloved daughter, Kimberly Rose Mahoney Hollowitsch.
The family would like to thank the staff at Laurel Manor and Emplify Health, specifically the palliative care team and 6th floor nurses for their support during June’s passing. They further would like to recognize Reverend Phillip Waselik, whom June adored and for the support from the Coulee Region Cremation Group.
Services will be Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1010 Sill St., La Crosse, with visitation one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be at a later date. The family is warmly inviting attendees to wear their favorite Packers, Brewers, Bucks or Wisconsin Badger gear to the funeral in June’s honor.
