Kurt “Kurty” Burg

January 5, 2026 | 5 comments

Kurt “Kurty” Burg, age 54, of Onalaska, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on November 19, 1971, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, to his parents Florian Burg and Patricia Burg (Johnson).

Eleven years ago, Kurty was lovingly welcomed into our family when he came to live with his brother Ken and Dawn. From the very beginning, he was a true blessing to all of us. After living with his mom, Patricia, and enduring the heartbreaking loss of her passing, Kurty made his home with our family in Onalaska, Wisconsin, where he remained surrounded by love until his death.

Kurty was deeply loved by many and left a lasting impression on everyone he met. One of his most prized possessions was his teddy bear, a special gift from Chloe, which brought him endless comfort. If Kurty was nearby, chances were Grease was playing. He absolutely loved the musical—listening to his favorite songs and watching the movie every night as part of a routine that was non-negotiable and very much his.

During those years, Kurty was surrounded by love, care, and a sense of belonging. He became an important and cherished part of our family, touching our lives in countless ways. He formed a particularly special bond with Dawn, who became like a mother to him. While no one could ever replace his beloved mom, Patrcia, Dawn cared for Kurty with the same devotion, patience, and love as if he were her own son.

Kurty’s presence brought joy, laughter, and meaning to our family, and the memories we shared with him will remain in our hearts forever.

Kurty’s little quirks were legendary and brought constant laughter to those around him. He had a face (or ten) for every emotion—grumpy face, happy face, big smile, dramatic expressions, and everything in between. His many facial expressions and hand gestures were his language. Pointing, hands on his face or head, thumbs up, or a well-timed look let you know exactly what he was thinking—no words needed. You always knew where you stood with Kurty.

Kurty could often be stubborn and very set in his ways, but Dustin always had a special way with him. Whether it meant driving out of his way to help Dawn when Kurty refused to get out of the car, or simply showing up at just the right moment, Dustin knew exactly how to reach him. He would greet Kurty with a smile and say the “magic words,” and somehow, every time, Kurty would cooperate.

Whenever Dustin came to see him, Kurty’s face lit up with the biggest smile. Their connection was something truly special, and it brought comfort and joy to everyone who witnessed it.

He enjoyed attending daycare, where he received wonderful care from his teachers. He learned so much there and was always greeted with kindness and respect. Kurty had an impressive memory and a way of greeting his family with an infectious smile and the most lovable hugs—hugs that made you feel instantly welcome and loved.

Kurty was truly one of a kind. He was loved deeply and will be missed more than words can express. Our family finds comfort in knowing he was surrounded by love, care, laughter, and familiarity throughout his life.

Kurty taught us patience, joy in routine, and how much can be said without ever speaking a word. His smile, his cute little wave, his hugs, and yes—Grease— “Go Grease Lighting” will live on forever in our hearts.

Kurty was preceded in death by his mom Patricia Burg (Johnson), his dad, Florian Burg, and his brother Ken Schafer.

Kurty is survived by Dawn Hove, who—though not related by blood—was placed in his life by God and became his devoted caregiver and loving mother in every way that truly mattered. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1Corinthians 13:7)

He is also survived by Jessie (Bill) Six and Casey (Eric) Lawerence, his beloved “sisters”  who brought laughter, love, and friendship into his life and reminded everyone that God builds families in the most beautiful, unexpected ways.

Kurty is further survived by his loving brother, Erik (Karen) Burg, Step-mom Marg, and his sister, Julie Farr; and many other family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory and the special bond they shared with him.

Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who loved, supported, and cared for Kurty throughout his life. A special thank-you to his caseworkers, Matt and Theresa, for their guidance, advocacy, and kindness. We are also deeply thankful to Lisa and the entire hospice care team at St. Croix Hospice for their compassionate care and support.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Mayo Health System emergency room providers who cared for Kurty during his final hours and who showed such compassion and support to our family during an incredibly difficult time.

Your care, kindness, and dedication will never be forgotten, and our family is forever grateful.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 9th, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Robin’s Nest, located at 328 Goddard Street, La Crosse, WI (French Island), in their banquet room. Coffee and desserts will be served.  Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family.

I love you so much, Mom. You gave everything to Kurty, and he felt it every single day. He knew how deeply you loved and cared for him. You could see it in his eyes the way they lit up whenever he heard your voice or saw you walk into the room. That was pure love.
Please remember that. You are so strong, even when it doesn’t feel like it. You will get through this. Kurty will forever be in your heart ❤️ with so many beautiful memories to hold onto.

Oh Kurty Burg! Your sass and spice will be missed so deeply. You never slowed down to let us all know how you truly felt and where we stood. Thank you for your kind smile, small wrinkled eyes, and of course, the constant sound of the Grease soundtrack in the back of our minds. You are so very loved and missed everyday! I’ll never hear Greased Lightning without thinking of you! Rest easy, Kurty ❤️
