LaVerne “Squint Leslie Dettinger, 79, of Galesville, WI, passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family on Monday, December 19, 2011 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born on November 13, 1932 to Leslie and Violet Dettinger. He married Darlene Hovell in 1953 at Tamarack Church.

 

He is survived by his wife, Darlene; 3 daughters, Shauna Dettinger, Roxanne (Ken) Harris, and Darla (Brian) Kopp; 3 grandchildren, Jason Vazquez, Rachel Harris, Hannah Kopp; 3 great-grandchildren, Gio Villareal, Julian Vazquez, Jason Vazquez; brother, Robert (Wilma) Dettinger, and many loving in-laws, nephews, nieces, and friends, too many to mention.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bill Dettinger; and step-father, Earl Dettinger.

 

Squint loved his family, his many dear and faithful friends, his hunting dogs, and the great outdoors.

 

He left us peacefully – we picture him smiling, crossing the fields, faithful dog at his side. I hear him saying, one last time “ I am at peace, let it go, kid, it is what it is..”

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2012 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 20237 West Ridge Ave., Galesville, WI. Please wear hunting attire. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Gunslick Trap Club, Holmen, WI or the Ettrick Rod and Gun Youth Program , Ettrick, WI.
