Obituary
Lyall M. Sylbaugh
Lyall M. Silbaugh, 83, of Onalaska passed away at the Tomah VA Medical Center on Saturday Dec. 29, 2012.
Lyall was born in Robbinsdale, MN on March 29, 1929 to Cleitus & Alice (Clark) Silbaugh. He attended schools in the Bloomingdale, Dell and Cashton areas.
He served in the US Army from April 4, 1947 to January 25, 1950. He was stationed in Korea and Japan.
On June 17, 1950 he married Harriet Schendel in Cashton. They had 5 children and divorced in 1961.
He worked at Trane Company for 29 years. Lyall married Marilyn Hauge in La Crosse on May 20, 1964.
They managed the Lake Onalaska M.H. Park for 14 years. Lyall always had an extra project to do, it could be installing something new or repairing something for himself, relatives or friends. It could be electrical or plumbing or carpentry or masonry related, including a 2 1/2 car garage on Hope Court and a large storage shed for Scott. He seemed to be a ‘Jack of all trades’ and enjoyed every minute of it.
Lyall & Marilyn traveled all over the United States including Hawaii and Alaska. He enjoyed fishing in almost every state they visited. He fished the most in Wisconsin on the Kickapoo, Mississippi, Bad Axe & Brule Rivers, bringing home his limit more times than not. Friends and family enjoyed many a fish fry at the Silbaugh residences, always cooked to perfection by Lyall. He also enjoyed hunting deer, squirrels, rabbits, turkeys, ducks & geese, anything he could bring home to eat. He hunted with various guns as well as the bow & arrow. Another favorite hobby was hunting for Indian Artifacts, mostly in Vernon County but never passed a chance to “look” wherever he visited. Through the years, he spent lots of time with friends and family members camping, canoeing, picnicking, blueberry picking, and hunting for morel mushrooms. These later years he enjoyed coffee and conversations at Nutbush with a group of guys. There were lots of family reunions through the years. Since Marilyn retired in 2006, most winters were spent with daughter Jude and family in San Luis Obispo, California.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marilyn, sons: Jeffrey (Emilee)of Athol, Idaho; Scott (Donna) of Onalaska; Daniel (Felecia) of Panama City, FL; daughters: Jude (Ron) Saffas of San Luis Obispo, CA & Lynn (Buddy) Miller of Sparta, WI; 8 grandchildren: Tino (Christine) Silbaugh, Los Osos, CA; Heather (Gene) Dixon, Panama City, FL; Rebekah (Carlos) Garcia of Grover Beach, CA; Lisa (Dean) Taylor of Bloomington, MN; Benjamin Silbaugh of College City, MD; Kevin (Page) Silbaugh of Sheridan, IN; Liana (Eric) O’Brien of San Angelo, TX; Lindsay (finance’ David Salis) Beckman of Sparta, WI; 10 great-grandchildren: Makayla & Keenan Moreno, Sierra Garcia, Adin Silbaugh, Brian O’Brien, Kyler Salis, Gavin Garcia, Nora Silbaugh, Alexis Salis, and Trinity Beckman and another great-granddaughter due in January; several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; former daughter-in-law Ann O’Connor and former son-in-law Loren Beckman; a brother David (Rose), a sister Kathy (Walt) Verdon of La Crosse, and a brother-in-law Alan (Maureen) Hauge of Adairsville, GA and special friends Jim Kremer & Bob Schieche, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

I am so sorry to hear of Lyall’s passing. When I lived in Onalaska, he helped me when I needed a man’s help, after my husband had passed away. I would see him at Nutbush having breakfast many times and he would ALWAYS talk and be very courteous to me whenever we talked. He was a very compassionate, loving, caring person. Rest in Peace, dear friend Lyall. He will be missed by MANY….
We are thinking about you at this time of your loss.
It was so nice to Lyall last summer when Lynette brought him to the Dewitt reunion at the Dell Church.

Dave let me know that UNC was no longer with us. I always enjoyed Lylaa when he came bow hunting with us along with Dave. Had bow hunted with him shortly after Dave and Bob S. started hunting with us, almost 40 years. Lyall was always upbeat bow hunting and allot of fun times were had especially up at Pease Resort. We know that Lyall is in a heavenly hunting grounds and He is sorely missed by us.

Dear Marilyn, We are sorry to hear of Lyall’s death. We will be making a memorial donation to the Nicodemus Fund at Dell church in Lyall’s memory. We are very glad that his son stopped by with him several months ago-it must have been the DeWitt reunion (?) so that we could greet him. Our condolences and prayers. Linda and Forrest
Marilyn….I wish to offer my sincere condolences at Lyall’s passing. Although it’s been many years since we last saw each other I thought of Lyall often. He taught me to love and respect the outdoors the same way he did. I have especially fond memories of the many hours that he and I spent trout fishing on the Kickapoo or walleye fishing on the Mississippi. But fondest of all are my memories of the times the three of us spent on the Brule; camping, canoeing and fishing. I always considered Lyall a good friend and the world will be a lesser place without him. All my best to you and the family in this difficult time.
