Obituary
Mark H. Helming
Mark Helming was born in Cedar Rapids, IA, on January 5th, 1958. He passed away unexpectedly November 23rd 2024 leaving behind his partner of 17 years, Nancy Johnson, his father Kenneth Helming (La Crescent), sisters Minda Hesselberg (La Crescent) and Melissa Neumann (Elroy), bonus daughter Laura and son-in-law Mark Kendhammer, granddaughter Pumpkin Little Khloe Kendhammer (La Crosse), and niece Sarah (Jesse) Otto and their children Jackson and Elodie (Onalaska).
Mark was a 1977 graduate of Burnsville High School. He moved to La Crosse and worked at Inland Printing, then in the mid-90’s he started working at Mid-City Steel. While working there he realized his passion for welding and decided to take a leap and went out on his own, starting Affordable Portable Welding, which he proudly owned and operated until his final days, never hanging up his tools or losing his passion for his work.
Although Mark had a tough exterior, Khloe possessed the magic to melt away his rough edges. With her playful spirit, she could charm him into anything. Whether it was playing house, building legos, or even letting her do his makeup, Papa couldn’t resist her adorable requests. No matter what, Khloe’s sweet smile and innocent laugh always had him wrapped around her little finger. Papa would never say “no” to his precious Pumpkin Little, no matter the situation.
Rest easy, Mark. Your welds held strong, your fishing lines stayed taut, and your love for your family was the greatest masterpiece of all. Now fishing in the peaceful waters of heaven, where the currents are gentle and the skies are always clear.
He’s proceeded in death by his mother, Norma, and brother-in-law, Daniel Hesselberg.
A celebration of life will be held at Wieser Memorial Park Pavilion, 1817 County Rd 6, La Crescent, MN 55947 on Friday January 3, 2025, from 4-8pm. A private burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you cherish your loved ones and tell them you appreciate them—today could be the last day you see them.
Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family at this time.
I grew up with Mark in Burnsville, great guy!
Rest in peace my friend.
This is a beautiful eulogy. It’s truly Mark and things he loved and enjoyed in his life. He was a river friend, a fishing friend and a good friend. He even did some welding for us. Lots of great memories. One last yell to “BUSTER”
R.I.P. Mark, you were always the nicest guy
We are so sorry to hear of this unexpected loss. Sharing in your sadness. Hugs to all, Dean and Debbie Seidel ❤️
Had many good times with Mark “back in the day”. Peace to you all.
May he – Rest in Peace.
Nancy, there are no words we can offer to show our deepest sympathy. You two were the greatest neighbors, whether it was sharing Amish auction veggies, or helping snow plowing, to scaring the crap out of me with that rubber rat. We knew we had a friend in Mark.
I know you have many wonderful, beautiful memories together and pray they bring you comfort. With our deepest condolences.

I could always count on him to be my buddy watching the Viking game. He was so nice and never seemed to be angry about anything. I’ll miss having you around at Andy’s to have on my side! Go Vikings 💜💛
