October 29, 2012 | 9 comments

Marlene (Marcy) Marie Buehler, 80, of West Salem, WI., formerly of Bloomington, MN and Knoxville, TN, passed away peacefully in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center on October 25, 2012. A grandson, Adam Noel, and a daughter, Tara Noel, were at her bedside….her family gathered close by.

Despite respiratory difficulties Marcy was still enjoying evening rides in the country in September watching farmers reap a bountiful Wisconsin harvest.

Marcy was born in Litchfield, MN and later moved to Bismarck, ND where she finished her elementary and scholastic years. In 1951 she enrolled at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. There she pursued a double major in English and History, took courses from Dr. R. G. Buehler, and met Don Buehler, her future husband. She graduated from Hamline in 1954 and shortly thereafter joined the faculty in the St. Louis Park School District. She taught 8th Grade English in that system for over 30 years.

Over the years Marcy became deeply involved in the world of Contract Bridge. Her tournament competition was at the highest level, stretching across a dozen states while she achieved the American Contract Bridge League’s rank of Silver Life Master. She taught the game at several levels and served as an officer in several clubs. She was president of a large club which headquartered in Knoxville, TN, administering a district containing numerous groups in Virginia and Tennessee. When the chair of Knoxville’s fall sectional tournament suddenly resigned Marcy volunteered and produced a record 384 tables! She agreed to continue in that position.

While in Knoxville Marcy served as president of the OMNI Women’s Club, a social service organization. She was also active in the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Marcy is survived by her husband, Don, of 59 years; three children, Cheryl Buehler, Greensboro, NC, Tara Noel, West Salem, WI, and Scott Buehler, La Crosse, WI. In addition Marcy is survived by four grandchildren, Holly Tunkel, Sante Fe, NM, Adam Noel, North Richland Hills, TX, Samantha Noel, Onalaska, WI, and Alan Noel, University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.

Marcy was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Emma Nelson of Bismarck, ND, and her sister, Peggy Jean Nelson, Bloomington, MN.

In keeping with Marcy’s wishes, no funeral is planned. A celebration of her life will be held for family and close friends in West Salem during the Christmas holidays. Online condolences may be left at www.couleecremation.com.

Memorials preferred to local food shelves and pantries.

My sympathy to all of you upon Marcy’s passing. I have such fond memories of her from our teaching days at Westwood. She was an excellent teacher who always had such success with students who weren’t always easy. I remember Marcy’s boundless energy and enthusiasm. And I also remember how beautifully dressed she always was.

To the family of Mrs. Buehler: Mrs. Buehler was my favorite middle school teacher – except for my father, Mr. Lee. When I was in 9th grade I was editor of the JUST US! I remember her talking about Cheryl, Tara and Scott and what they were doing. (I spent my study hour in her class putting together the paper, so we had a lot of time to talk!) I saw her again about seven years ago – she hadn’t changed a bit. My condolences to you, her family. I remember her with the greatest of affection. Krista Lee, SLP class of 1979

Dear Cheryl, Tara, Scott and family,
Your mom’s notice in today’s paper brought some very fond memories. Through all our years at Hillcrest, Penn, and Lincoln together, I remember your mom’s tremendous energy. She often took a sincere interest in me as a friend of Tara’s, and almost always had a word of encouragement and support. I’m sure she will be deeply missed. You have my deepest sympathy and prayers for comfort and peace.

    Don and family,
When I saw the obituary for Marcy, I was flooded with such warm memories. Mrs. Buehler was my 8th grade English teacher at Central Jr High in SLP and the next year was my advisor on the Just Us. I can hear her voice right now, even that was 46 years ago. She was such a lovely person.
Don, I also remember when you were covering the war protests at the UofM. Thank you for dealing with us with integrity. What a time that was!
My sincere condolences to all of you. She was such a great lady.

Our sympathies to Don and his family. Although only in our neighborhood for a short time, Don has been a great neighbor. Sorry we did not get the chance to know Marcy. If Don needs any assistance, please let us know.
