I will miss Paul, he has been my neighbor for over 40 years, and a very good one. When I first met him, he was working on cleaning up a fence row that had lots of overgrown trees. He was there by himself, and it began to rain. I headed into my house as I was going to go out and clean my side of the fence, but not in the rain. Well, Paul kept on working, and an hour later he got a fire going, in the rain! I finally thought well if he can do it, I could also and I did. After an hour or so, it quit raining and so I asked if I could put my brush on his fire, and he said yes, and he would help me.

We had many visits on the fence row over the years, and also in the woods where we would both cut firewood alongside each other. I was always amazed at Paul’s perspective on so many issues. We talked a lot about politics and world events and I enjoyed that.

The thing that I claim the most remarkable is the day I saw him in the field next to mine with a binder and he was making small clumps of oats. I was amazed at that, but when he showed up in the hot sun and started stacking those, in neat little groups, I had seen that in movies, and I was not going to miss the opportunity to help with that. This was out of the last century, and in my wildest dreams, I did not think I would ever see this, not to mention help. Paul showed me how to stack them, and I tried to keep up with him, but that was a challenge.

Paul will never be famous, but he was a remarkable part of history that I will never forget. Paul, like his dad Pete, the few times I saw him always had a smile.
