DeWayne “Smokey” Francis Aasen

DeWayne “Smokey” Francis Aasen age 88, of Mindoro, WI passed away peacefully Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse, WI. He was born April 18, 1934 to William and Florence Aasen. He married Artis J. Torgerson October 17, 1959 in Viroqua, WI.

DeWayne had many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed deer hunting, cross country skiing, woodworking and cabinet making, gardening, American Legion activities, including serving as former commander, winning Euchre games against his children and grandkids, and long walks in the woods with his dog.

DeWayne is survived by his wife, Artis; brothers, Ken and Bill; sister Patricia Thomas; children, Kristine (Mark) Stauffacher, Laura (Samuel) Loizzo, Eric (Sue), Knute (Jennifer), Andrew (Cindi), Sarah (Danford) Kern; grandchildren, Matthew Stauffacher, Megan Stauffacher, Peter (Madeline) Loizzo, Jessica (Michael) Delaney, Abigail Aasen, Avery (Riley) Upton, Elias Aasen, Seth Aasen, Emily Aasen, Rachel Greene, Carolyn (Lucas) Morrissey, Zachary Aasen, Justin Aasen, Nathan Kern, and Ellison Kern; great-grandchildren, Payson Stauffacher, Frederick Loizzo, Cooper Delaney, and Fletcher Morrissey.

DeWayne is preceded in death by his parents, William and Florence; brother, Donald; sisters, Avis Aasen, Lorraine Peterson, Janice Erickson, Mary Olson, and Eileen Peterson.

Special thank you to the staff at Gundersen Lutheran Health System.

In Lieu of Flowers, memorials can be made to the Children Miracle Network or the La Crosse County Veterans Center.

A visitation will be held April 20, 2023 from 5pm-7pm at The Gathering Place (133 Mason St., Onalaska, WI). Visitation will be held April 21, 2023 starting 10 am at St. Teresa of Kolkata Catholic Church (210 W. Hamlin St West Salem, WI 54669) beginning at 10 am. The service will be at 11am at the church celebrated by Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill, Rev. Douglas C. Robertson, and Deacon Robert Zietlow.

    I am so very sorry to read about Dwayne’s passing. I just lost my brother in law on April 10th and I am with my sister in Virginia helping her with her grief. When I return home I will surely contact you Artis. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this most difficult time.
