Evelyn Elizabeth (Huber) Jensen

July 5, 2019 | 8 comments

Evelyn (Evie) Jensen, 93 years young, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2019 at Eagle Crest North in Onalaska, WI where she resided the past eight years.

She was born in Portland, WI township on October 5, 1925 to Nicholas and Anna (Weinke) Antony, and grew up in Rockland, WI along with her nine siblings.  She married Norbert Huber on October 28, 1942.  After moving to Madison they had five children, Sharilynn, Michael, Richard and her first set of twins, Larry and Gary. Evie and Norbert later divorced.

Like her mother, she was fiercely independent long before it was fashionable. She was a tireless worker with a positive attitude, which served her well for the 30 years she worked as a waitress in Madison.  She did everything with a smile!

While working at the student union in Madison, she caught the eye of a tall, handsome student, Gordon Jensen.  They were married March 1, 1952, and before long welcomed their twins, Jack and Jeannine. A full house!!  When Gordie passed away in 1978, Evie moved to La Crescent, MN where she worked for 20 years managing apartments and doing maintenance, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Evie spread cheer wherever she went.  She loved her family and cherished the fun Antony family gatherings filled with music, dancing and laughter, as well as reconnecting with all the Hubers at their reunions. Evie was an avid reader, she particularly enjoyed biographies and mysteries.  She loved bowling, which she did into her late 80s, attending tournaments and winning trophies. She also loved bingo, which she played whenever and wherever she could.  She especially treasured the long car trip she took in 1995-96 with her daughter, Shari, playing bingo from coast to coast before Shari passed away on March 7, 1996.

She is survived by her children; Richard (Corky) Huber of La Crescent, MN, Gary (Luann) Huber of Kendall, WI, Larry Huber of Rice Lake, WI and Jeannine Jensen Coleman (Lawrence) of San Diego, CA; sisters, Anna Mae (Annie) Hemmersbach of Sparta, WI and Amelia (Millie) Bradley of La Crosse; grandchildren, Holly (Ken) Barber, Dawn (Tony) Galarce, Todd Huber, Jeff Huber, Amy (Jason) Lovell, Erica Huber, Elisha Kupper, Michael Huber, Kenneth Huber, Lena Coleman, Dexter Coleman, Michael (Melissa) Peterson, Deborah Malone and Jon Malone, as well as 22 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Anna Mae Antony and many special nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husbands, those who went before her include:  daughter, Sharilynn Peterson, son, Jack Jensen, and infant son Michael Huber; grandson, Christopher Huber; brothers, Laverne Antony, Erling Antony (Evie’s twin), Aloysious (Al) Antony, Nick Antony; sisters, Lorraine Brueggeman, Emily Briant and Mary Hemmersbach, sisters-in-law Helen Antony, Alice Antony, and Janice Antony; brothers-in-law, Leo Hemmersbach and Lambert Hemmersbach.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of Eagle Crest North, especially the memory care staff, for so lovingly caring for Evie these past years. To Kris, Cheryl, Andie, Becky, Trece, Christina (and we’re sure many others) – you were Evie’s second family and we will never forget your kindness, patience and compassion from the first day to the last minute.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

We would also like to thank Evie’s companion, Florann Graf, who made it possible for her to continue playing bingo, and to her many La Crescent bingo friends who were always so kind and caring.  And many thanks to Judy Rowley who provided transportation to bowling so Evie could bowl and see her buddies. We really appreciate all of you!

A Celebration of Evie’s Life will be held Friday, July 12th, at the Coulee Region Cremation Group, 133 Mason St., Onalaska, WI, with visitation and sharing beginning at 10:00 and memorial service at 11:00.  In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) in Evie’s name or to your favorite non-profit/charity is appreciated.

Enjoy your afterlife, Mom. It gives us much comfort knowing that you are certainly cradling Michael, playing bingo with Shari and cards with Jack.  We love you!!
