Gerry Edward Slimmen
Gerry Edward Slimmen, 86, of Holmen, passed away peacefully on July, 22, 2019 at Hillview Health Care Center, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and cancer.
He was born on May 7, 1933 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Adrian and Violet (Debruin) Slimmen, he was the oldest of 8 children. He enlisted in the Army when he was age 17. He served 3 years in Korea during the Conflict. He received the Bronze Star for his service.
Gerry worked in plumbing construction within the state, including the Fish Lab on French Island, waste water treatment plants, etc. He loved the outdoors, hunting, trapping, fishing, stock cars and racing.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sharon Coyle; sons, Robert (Mary) Slimmen of La Crosse, Edward (Dana) Slimmen of Black River Falls; daughters, Sandra Paoenzuela of La Crosse, Barbara Ellis of La Crosse, Linda (Dan) Mossholder of La Crosse from previous marriage. Kevin Slimmen of Holmen; stepsons, David (Cheryl) Rhodes of Reedsburg, Timothy (Doris) Coyle of Holmen. He is further survived by 15 grand and step grandchildren; 22 great and step great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. He is also survived by his brother, Arnold Sutherland, Virginia and Bill of Waterford, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Don, Richard, and Fred; sisters, Kathleen and Patricia; and grandson, Aaron Slimmen.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Gundersen Health System Hospice, the staff at the Hillview Health Care Center for all their help and care.
A visitation will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 28, 2019 in the Prairie Room at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason St. Onalaska with Military Honors to follow at 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers donations can be to Gundersen Cancer Center of Alzheimer’s Association.
Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family.
