October 6, 2021 | 28 comments

Joseph Thomas Schmitt 32, of La Crosse, passed away on October 3, 2021. He was born on June 4,1989.

Joe was a natural performer since he was very little and loved putting on a show. He could light up the room with his smile and sense of humor. He loved his family deeply, looked up to his mother and father, and was a proud big brother to his three sisters. He was a gifted, passionate, and intelligent individual. Addiction stole him from us but it will never define him. He loved the Lord Jesus and helping others. He aspired to be an addiction counselor to see those battling addiction set free. Joe had a huge heart for people and was loved by many.

Joe is survived by his father Tom Schmitt, mother Valerie (Meador) Wells, sisters; Anna, Audrey Zellman (Gunnar) and Julie, also by many aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 10, 2021 in the Gathering Place at Coulee Region Cremation Group, 133 Mason Street, Onalaska. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army (La Crosse) or Hope Gospel Mission (Eau Claire). Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family in their time of loss.

Our hearts are broken and our spirits mourn. Lord, all I know is your grace is sufficient. This day, this hour, this moment we choose to lean on you. For when we are at our weakest, your strength is strongest. We pour out our grief to you. And praise You that one glorious day we shall walk together with Joey again.

    Val,

May God wrap you all in peace knowing he is free and healed by Jesus. Though his earthly absence is an overwhelming pain for those who long for him… his renewed spirit is grateful for all the love he received. May you always know that your love will always be with him and his love is engraved with in all of you.

Joe was such a light in many peoples lives. Especially here at Salvation Army. Joe would sit and talk with residents and try to give them hope with their situations when Joe really needed that hope himself. He was so giving and that smile could light up a room. We will definitely miss “our Joe”
Everyone at Salvation Army shelter send their love and prayers!

I got to know Joe thru lifting weights at the YMCA in Onalaska. He always went out of his way to say hello, and he was always smiling and positive. It was a bright spot during my workouts to see him and catch up. He will be missed!

  22. Barbara Almond

My heart is heavy because Joe was my favorite, although, I know we not suppose to have favorites but it will be our secret. He helped all those he came in contact with and allowed me to see the person behind mask he wore daily. The entire staff and residents at the Sally will truly miss him.
