Madelyn S. “Maddie” Payne

December 7, 2022 | 25 comments

Madelyn S. “Maddie” Payne, 9, of La Crosse passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at Gundersen Health System, La Crosse. She was born on October 16, 2013 to her devoted parents Greg and Sarah Payne. Although her time with us was short, she used those days to spread love and joy to all who knew her. She enjoyed music and spending time outdoors camping with her family. At home she was happiest cuddling in dad’s lap, reading with mom, and playing with her sister and brother. She was rarely without her favorite pink bunny. In 2017 she was selected as a Children’s Miracle Network hero and through that experience she changed lives for many other families and children in need.

She is survived by her parents, Greg and Sarah Payne, sister Ava, and brother Arlo.  Grandparents, Scott and Dorothy Payne, Tom and Meredith Hougen. Preceded in death by her cousin Oakley Payne, maternal great grandparents: Roy and Carol Marcum, Sydney and Clarice Shrove, and Alton Hougen. Paternal great-grandparents: Hegbert and Ruth Payne, and Leslie and Eleanor Voigt. The Paynes would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to their family, friends, and the many healthcare professionals who have cared for and supported Madelyn and her family through these 9 years.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, December 10, 2022 at First Lutheran Church, 410 Main St., Onalaska. Pastor Jason Stanton will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to her family for allocation to various charities.
