Hello my name is Liza Gilbert and I went to high school with Marty. To whoever reads this, I would very much like you to know who Marty was to me. I didn’t know in high school that I am autistic, I just knew I didn’t have many friends and felt very different. Marty was one of the few people I considered an honest and true friend. He didn’t care that I was different, and his sense of humor made me feel less separate in the world. If I think about high school, Marty remains one of the bright spots in what was a hard experience for me. He gave me hope that I could have friends, and good ones at that. To whoever knew him and loved him, please know that he was, even as a teen, an honorable and kind man. My sincere condolences.

Marty’s passing has come as a shock and I am deeply saddened by his loss. I went to high school with Marty and he always was able to make me laugh, even on my worst days. I always remember him having a big smile on his face and his heart was just as big. When I lost my mother, Marty was one of the few people who was able to make me smile for a little while during that first Christmas without her. The world is definitely a darker place without him in it. Marty will be terribly missed.
