Mary Margaret Covey

February 23, 2023 | 11 comments

Mary Margaret Covey, age 86, of La Crosse, WI, went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse born on February 17, 1937, to Louis Cervantes and Guadalupe Vilalebos, She married Robert (Bob) Covey on February 17, 1962, in Harvard, IL

Mary was an avid reader and never without a book to read. She especially enjoyed American History, biographies and her best book, her Bible. She spent many hours researching the lineage of her and her husband’s family tree and was considered the family historian by many.

She was very proud to be a truck driver’s wife, not an easy life. Maintaining the household, always three-square meals a day, clean clothes and needs met. In her early years, Mary was very active in her church and her Bible studies. She treasured her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and recently became a great-great grandmother. She enjoyed her special dinners and lunches with them as time allowed and all were so special to her in their own way.

She even played football with her grandsons, and many considered her to be their “adopted” grandma. Mary had a fascination with crows because of their intelligence and beauty (as she would say). She was affectionately known as “Granny Crow” or just “Crow” to many. She had a special relationship with several of her nieces and was blessed by their many conversations and correspondence. Mary was also a woman of deep faith and was a ferocious prayer warrior. Don’t worry, no prayer goes unanswered, she believed it and it is so.

She is survived by her daughter, Wanda (David) Rogers, West Salem, WI. Sons, Robert (Bob), (Ruth) of La Crosse, and Ed (Julie Pettygrove) of Onalaska, WI. Three stepchildren, Mike (Tennessee), Cindy Ferrara (Monona, Wi), Kim Fenne of New Port Richey, FL. A sister-in-law, Margaret Bambrough of Reedsburg, WI, and Sharon Cervantes of Delevan, WI.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert (Bob), Siblings, Hope, Tony, Angie, John, Cyril, Lucy, Paul, Margaret and Louis Jr. and her granddaughter, Taylor.

Numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, and several very special and close friends.

Services will be held at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason Street, Onalaska, WI, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 4th, 2023. Visitations will be on Friday evening, March 3rd, 2023, from 5-7 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service at The Gathering Place.  In lieu of flowers, memorial would be preferred.  Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family.

“I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But, if it dies, it produces many seeds.” John 12:24

We love you Mama, we miss you but will certainly see you again soon!!
