Obituary

Paul Schams

June 12, 2026 | 7 comments

Paul Schams, 70, of La Crosse, WI, passed away on June 6, 2026.  Paul was born on January 1, 1956, in La Crosse, WI, to David and Sharon Schams.

Paul was a graduate of Central High School. Following graduation, he began his career as a union carpenter, where he developed the strong work ethic and craftsmanship that would define much of his life. He later joined the family business, Hemstock Block, where he worked alongside his sister, Renee, helping expand and grow the company into a cornerstone of the community.

Through their shared dedication and vision, Hemstock Block played a significant role in the growth and development of La Crosse during the 1990s. The company was eventually sold in the early 2000s, allowing Paul to enjoy a well-earned retirement at a relatively young age. One of Paul’s greatest passions was rebuilding late-model cars. He took pride in bringing vehicles back to life and enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction that came with every project. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and could often be found cheering on his favorite drivers.

Paul loved spending time outdoors, whether golfing with friends, fishing on the Mississippi River, or escaping the Wisconsin winters to vacation in warmer climates. A devoted Green Bay Packers fan, he rarely missed a game and looked forward to every season.

Paul was a man of quiet strength, known for his gentle nature, quick wit, and deeply caring heart. While he never sought the spotlight, he built lasting friendships throughout his life, and those who knew him appreciated his loyalty, humor, and kindness. He shared his love of the outdoors, his dedication to hard work, and his practical wisdom with his family, leaving a lasting impact on his nieces and nephews. The lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the example he set will continue to be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

Paul is survived by his siblings, David “Chuck” Schams, Renee Kramer (Ron), Maureen Stivaletta (Wayne), many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held for Paul on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at 11:30 am at The Gathering Place, 133 Mason St., Onalaska by Father Rick Roberts.  Visitations will be held one hour prior to the service and on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm both at The Gathering Place.  Coulee Region Cremation Group is assisting the family.

Paul was a favorite cousin. He had a kind and empathetic heart . I always enjoyed visiting with him when he came to visit or when I was home in LaCrosse. I will cherish the fond memories of our childhood. He will be missed by all that truly knew him.

Wow, this is a terrible shock – Paul was the athlete on Cliffwood Lane when we were in grade/high school, best in all our games on the sandlots in the neighborhood. He probably was my best friend in teen years. And in later years too, I remember Paul as a gentle & friendly soul. He is an awful loss to this world. I am so, so sorry to see this – God bless him and all his siblings. Our families were neighbors with good memories and respect for the Schams family.

As my brother described, the Schams family were our nextdoor neighbors growing up. Paul was a legitimately tough kid who nevertheless was always friendly with those on the block (like myself) who weren’t as tough or strong as he was. He was a good, no-nonsense guy. You always knew where you stood with Paul. Those are fine qualities to have and clearly he always had them throughout his life. Our deepest sympathies to the Schams family.

I met Paul through my daughter-in-law, Lauren Frost. I spent holidays and birthday parties with him and Andy and Lauren’s family. Paul hosted a 70th birthday party/retirement party for me at his beautiful farm in Chaseburg; a gesture I will never forget. Rest in peace, Paul, and my God bless your soul.

Very sorry to hear of Paul’s passing. I knew Paul and the rest of his family during the time they lived on 28th Street. I remember Paul as an extremely good-natured man and fun to be around.
