William Allen Miller

William (Bill) Allen Miller, 72, died in his home in Onalaska, WI on Thursday, November 19, 2020. Bill was born in La Crosse, WI to Richard (Chuck) and Lorraine (Herber) Miller on April 21, 1948. After graduating from Onalaska High School in 1968, he enlisted in the Army and served his country in the Vietnam War.

After the Vietnam War he met is first wife Eleanore (Apka) Slimmen and together had Melissa. He later met the love of his life Linda Duresky whom he married on December 13, 1980 and would have celebrated their 40-year anniversary this year. They had two children together, Adam and Amy. Bill began his lifelong career working several local construction companies as a bricklayer and mason and then joining Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons Local 599 Area 257 and worked as a journeyman until he retired. His favorite past times were deer hunting, fishing, gardening, watching the Packers and spending time with family. He liked watching the Discovery and National Geographic channels, and Westerns.

Bill enlisted in the Army in 1969 and trained with the 82nd Airborne Division. He served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry. He was honorably discharged from service and awarded several medals including the bronze star and purple heart.  He then enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard and was in the 32nd Engineers.  In 1986 the Wisconsin 32nd Separate Infantry Brigade (Mech) traveled to Germany for Reforger 86.  He was then with the 173rd Engineer Battalion until he retired in 1997 having served for 20 years.

Bill is survived by his wife Linda, son Adam Miller, daughters Melissa Miller and Amy (Sara) Mannel. Seven grandchildren Sharissa Miller (Melissa), Amara, Rylee, and Isabelle Mannel, Hannah Gruen, Lillian Horihan, Leeland Roraff (Amy and Sara). Brothers Gene (Julie Stone) Miller, Rick and Mike Miller, sisters Angie Olson, Penny (Ken) Taylor, mother-in-law Anna Duresky, brother-in-law Dale Duresky, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, uncles, aunts, brother-in-laws Pete Olson and Daniel Duresky, and great niece Bree Ann Burgus.

Bill is loved and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at a later date which will be determined by his family and the coronavirus situation.

      My condolences to the Miller family. I recall that whenever our paths would cross Bill always had a friendly hello with a smile. For some unknown reason we both managed to be at a Onalaska Kwik Trip store at the same time. Anyway, it was always a pleasure to run into him. From one Vietnam Vet to another, rest in peace my friend. Dennis
